I run Wilma (ftp://ftp.hpc.uh.edu/pub/wilma/) on top of Mailman.
It seems to work pretty much right out of the box.  Wilma uses
Glimpse for searching and MHonArc
(http://www.oac.uci.edu/indiv/ehood/mhonarc.html) 
for maintaining the archive.  By configuring so that the index and
archive files are accessed through Mailman's cgi-bin/private
mechanism, the subscriber/password protection on the archives
works.
