Well, you could get away with the following setup:
Instead of xyz, you name your mailing lists xyzlocal.

Now, at both centers, install an an alias that expands
xyz to xyzlocal and xyzlocal at center2 or xyzlocal at center1.

Actually, you could probably get away by creating xyz lists, and some creative
aliasing too.
