Yes, I did look at the faq. It does not answer my question though as
far as I can see:

How do subscribed users to a list, and _only_ those, access private
archives?

Remember that I do not get a "not permission" message from the web
server. It says the archives aren't found at the given address. And if
they were found it would mean anyone could actually see them. I do not
understand what "mechanism" keep no-members out of private archives.
