Just to avoid misconceptions, the db files Mailman uses are not Berkley DB
nor gdbm or anything like that. They are python marshals, generated
by the "marshal" standard python module (on of the ways to do object
persistence in python). And yes, they are very easy to manipulate (if you
know python, that is...)
