[Mailman-Users] Installation Problems with Mailman

I'm installing Mailman 2.0Beta and am having trouble with configure.
When I run ./configure from the /home/mailman/mailman-2.0beta2 directory it fails with error message:

   checking for mailman UID... cat: conftest.out: No such file or directory
   No "mailman" user found

The user/group  mailman does exist and can login OK
I'm installing on Redhat Linux v5.2
Any help would be greatly appreciated
