[Mailman-Users] weird "@" treatment

I subscribe to my own list e.g. "mylist" at abc.com with the name
e.g. sam at abc.com.
In the welcome message, the subscriber page is given as

   http://www.abc.com/mailman/options/mylist/sam%40abc.com

The heading on that page is:

mylist Configuration for sam at abc.com

Eevrything works fine.
But why is the "@" symbol being interpreted this way and can it be suppressed?
