I'm reaching the conclusion that *something* is broken in the code. It appears
to be objecting to some pattern in my data, but it stops without any error
messages, anywhere. I'm going to try some trace statements in the code,
maybe dump out the subject line of each message processed. I won't bore the
list with the details, but I've got dozens and dozens of test runs here with
aggravatingly consistent results, and yet I can't see the cause. If I nuke a
message that seems to be "the one", the problem just moves down to the next.
And some messages are being skipped, silently. That's kinda scary for a data
import routine.

I'll post to the list when I have more definitive info.
