Assuming your mailman and sendmail installation are on the same machine,
is it not possible to configure sendmail to accept relay without
authentication from localhost (127.0.0.1)?

SMTP auth isn't really buying you much here - other than I guess making
it a little harder to configure an open relay by accident (which is
useful).  However the auth will impact your SMTP sessions - although not
to an extent likely to significantly impair performance.
