Your method should work fine. Stopping and starting Mailman shouldn't
hurt anything. I just use "reopen" because it was specifically added to
Mailmanctl to handle this situation:

    reopen  - This will close all log files, causing them 
              to be re-opened the next time a message is
              written to them
