The welcome message template is called subscribeack.txt and is
installed in $prefix/mailman/templates/en/subscribeack.txt.

If you want to change this message for all users of your site, create
$prefix/mailman/templates/site/en/ and copy subscribeack.txt there,
then edit it.  This will prevent your changes from being wiped out
when you upgrade Mailman.

You can also customize the message on a per list or per domain basis.
Check the archives of this list for more details (not sure off the top
of my head if there is a FAQ entry for this or not).  A search for
templates ought to bring up any relevant entries if there are.
