Yes, thanks, that's part of what I was looking for.  Unfortunately
this page doesn't address the apache rewrite issue, but here's
something that works for me with apache 2.2.  Edit httpd.conf and:

<Directory "/usr/local/mailman">
    RewriteEngine on
    Options FollowSymLinks ExecCGI
    AllowOverride None
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from
    RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$
    RewriteRule ^.*$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R]
