My motivation is a deep love of democracy and the hope that bringing
forward a truly cooperative model of decision-making will help the
world. But any list that invites input from the members for
decision-making (like this one), might like to use it for polling,
rather than having someone do a hand count of the votes in messages.

There is a patch for Mailman 2.0.13 at
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/evote that attaches polling/voting
facilities to Mailman lists.

Any user can poll the list by sending the command:

---
eVote poll public visible [y/n]
message:
Shall we implement polling/voting?
---

for example, to the list address. eVote sucks the mail out of the
mail stream and generates instructions that go to the list.

The "eVote" keyword is used for voting, changing your vote when the
discussion changes your mind, querying the results, seeing how others
voted (if public), and generating new polls -- which can be numeric,
multiple choice, or rate the choices.

If you wish to see this in action, you are welcome to play with the
fiddle at deliberate.com list. Regrettably, it is a majordomo list since
we don't allow web access at deliberate.com's mail-server. But it
works the same on Mailman 2.0.13, i.e., no web interface.

eVote's mail messages are generated in C, the underlying specialized
database server (The Clerk) is in C++. A Python-generated web
interface would be lovely and much easier to use.

If anyone wants to fiddle with the existing eVote/Clerk software, you
are welcome to fiddle:

1. Write to:
    majordomo at deliberate.com

2. Subject doesn't matter.

3. Message should say:

    subscribe fiddle

Then follow the directions that will be sent to you to generate a
poll. The members of the list will be delighted to vote on your poll
and welcome you to the fiddle-with-eVote place.
