Doh. The link you quoted
(http://kb.mozillazine.org/Links_to_local_pages_don't_work) explains
it - you need to follow the instructions in "disabling the security
check" on the client PC. Sorry I didn't read that before posting.

We had a similar issue on our intranet wiki - I decided not to bother
worrying about it as the corporate standard is IE (which works without
changes), so only rebels like me use Firefox.
