I had the same problem when doing the vim howto:

^ = Go to the start of a line
{{{ = Go 3 paragraphs up
}}} = Go 3 paragraphs down

For the vim howto I landed up using the wiki creole parser, still a
mission though to get everything to look right.

You could also try using HTML entities, unfortunately they may not
display properly in all browsers. I found the following site useful,
just type the symbol in the box and choose the result you want.
