Todd has done the first phase of making changes to numarray to handle 
generalized ufuncs (the area of greatest incompatibility) and also make 
the necessary changes to scipy_base to support both numarray and 
Numeric. We are currently waiting for some feedback on the 
acceptability of these changes so we can continue modifying the rest of 
scipy to support numarray. So it is going ahead. I figure that once 
these changes are accepted and an agreement is reached on how setup.py 
should handle dual builds that anyone should be able to contribute to 
the porting effort. I hope that can happen in a few weeks. I don't know 
if that is quick enough for your needs. But you are welcome to take a 
look at what Todd has already checked into CVS in scipy (as a branch).
