It seems I may be a bit out of my element here! Nonetheless, i believe
I had http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laplace_expansion in mind--that is,
expansion of cofactors. It's been a while, but I recall this process
scaling to, well, scalars. I might be wrong!
