That's not actually the default right now by the way, in both 1.6.2 and
current master the default is 'safe'.

In [3]: np.__version__
Out[3]: '1.7.0.dev-fd78546'

In [4]: print np.can_cast.__doc__
can_cast(from, totype, casting = 'safe')

We are talking about a 1.7 release, but there are still people who have not
