So, this fails:

  File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/distutils/version.py", line 40, in __init__
  File "/usr/lib64/python2.7/distutils/version.py", line 107, in parse
    raise ValueError, "invalid version number '%s'" % vstring
ValueError: invalid version number '1.10.2rc1'

But I'm not sure numpy has made any contracts to follow the distutils
StrictVersion format:

Any thoughts?
