The instructors were a little goofy, but they did a pretty good job of laying out the basics and had interesting projects. This was the second time the class was taught and they have not announced when the next one will be. I would recommend it for those learning programming. I was most impressed with a browser based Python implementation (similar to Python Anywhere, but not as complete), CodeSkulpter, that the teachers developed to make sure all the students were playing in the same sandbox. I used it for many hours over the 8 week course and only remember it blowing up once. Here are the projects they had us do if you want to see some sample programs and how the class progressed. CodeSkulpter does not require an account, and it saves everything on the site - you just have to remember the url: rock spock paper lizard scissors: http://www.codeskulptor.org/#user20_o6aclwZZUk_4.py Guess the Number: http://www.codeskulptor.org/#user21_ruy3BHmQ0I_2.py Stopwatch: http://www.codeskulptor.org/#user21_30Ddl8wluO_2.py Pong: http://www.codeskulptor.org/#user23_mM24Oy8idD_15.py Memory: http://www.codeskulptor.org/#user24_oilMnGVAAp_7.py Blackjack: http://www.codeskulptor.org/#user25_bEhDAQMsAl_12.py RiceRocks2: http://www.codeskulptor.org/#user26_DH0ravYUFk_37.py Steve From Payne at MattPayne.org Wed Dec 11 05:19:00 2013 From: Payne at MattPayne.org (Matt Payne) Date: Tue, 10 Dec 2013 22:19:00 -0600 Subject: [omaha] Coursera and CodeSkulpter In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Very nifty! Who has all their Christmas shopping finished and wants to meet Wednesday? Whether you make it to the meeting or not, here is a nice presentation on Python and Android: https://speakerdeck.com/pyconca/android-the-land-that-python-forgot-christopher-neugebauer Steve From sramsey at aimforbrilliance.org Thu Dec 12 16:41:15 2013 From: sramsey at aimforbrilliance.org (Stefanie Ramsey) Date: Thu, 12 Dec 2013 09:41:15 -0600 Subject: [omaha] call for more CoderDojo mentors Message-ID: Good morning, We've had an excellent response from individuals in the coding and overall technology community who are interested in serving as mentors for our upcoming CoderDojo sessions! I'd like to get about 10-12 more who are interested in volunteering. CoderDojos are open learning environments in which kids learn how to code at their own pace and with their own creativity, with the guidance of experts in the field (mentors). CoderDojos occur all over the world, and we are excited to offer this in our area! We will be offering our CoderDojo sessions in Council Bluffs (Scratch for kids age 8-12) and in Omaha (programming language(s) TBD for kids 13-17) during 90 minute Saturday sessions in February and March. We will also offer a couple more sessions for 8-12 year old kids in Omaha in May. Commitment from mentors is only 2 hours each on a couple of Saturdays during this pilot period , though we'd love to keep mentors on the list for future CoderDojo opportunities. The only rule of the CoderDojo is to "be cool" -- and in this case, being "cool" means having a passion for technology and being willing to work with youth in an informal, non-classroom like setting. If you're interested, please fill out this volunteer applicationor simply send me your name and email address. Please share with your network of other area coders. Thanks!
