Internally, we start with vanilla django admin + admin.py customization. Then when we go beyond that we tend to write our own management features. The canned ones don't meet our needs without so much customization, that it keeps the mental load easier to just do it ourselves. However, we have some quite unique constraints that would make our decision different than others.
