A patch from David Malcolm (thanks!) to fix an issue with building the
website.

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: Missing "mkdir" in build/Makefile for out/community/jobs
Date: Tue, 02 Nov 2010 18:59:54 -0400
From: David Malcolm <dmalcolm at redhat.com>
To: webmaster at python.org

On a fresh checkout of https://svn.python.org/www/trunk/beta.python.org,
"make all" fails with:
python2.6 data/community/jobs/jobs2rss.py data/community/jobs/ out/community/jobs
Exception while updating jobs feed (2: No such file or directory)
Traceback (most recent call last):
   File "data/community/jobs/jobs2rss.py", line 167, in<module>
     sys.exit(main(sys.argv))
File "data/community/jobs/jobs2rss.py", line 157, in main
     outfile = open(os.path.join(outpath, 'jobs.rss'),'w')
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: 'out/community/jobs/jobs.rss'

The attached patch adds lazily creating the 'out/community/jobs' directory.

Very doable going forward if the event is added to the schedule.

Trying to dig up previous ceremonies is a good chunk of work. mainly
to find the raw files, which means knowing what day/time/room the
event occurred in.

I replaced it with the contents (but not the attachments) from the moinmo.in

FWIW, "make patchcheck" isn't mentioned on the "Python Patch Submission
Guidelines" here:
   http://www.python.org/dev/patches/
and doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere on the website.

I'm attaching a patch (to the website) that adds this to that page.

Failed for me from montanaro.dyndns.org using Chrome (that's part of
Comcast's world). Also failed using Lynx from www.smontanaro.net (that's at

That's the old IP address. By now you should be seeing the new one
(46.4.197.70).

However, there's still current a problem on bugs in that it can't resolve
DNS names itself. So it makes a long pause when you submit an update
while it tries to run various hooks that require DNS resolution in order
to complete, and outbound ticket email is queued because of temporary
name resolution failure.

I've notified the hosting company but haven't heard anything back yet.
(Changing resolv.conf to a public DNS server had no effect; it looks
like DNS is being blocked outside the machine somewhere).

To sum this up: the old hardware was dying the day before we meant to
move it to the new hardware, so Upfront moved it 7 hours early. As
a consequence, some people may have observed outage because it was
just crashed; some may have observed the migration, and some may have
observed stale entries in their DNS caches.

It's now on the new hardware; I'll update the DNS to return to using
XS4ALL only soon.

Martin

Ah. Somebody will need to change the DNS entry for that. I didn't know
that it didn't use a CNAME.

Oddly, works for me. I'm in upstate NY. However, traceroute also stops

I can get into the roundup ui just fine. I can also ssh into the box. The
static routes look odd to both myself and RDM. The problem is apparently bpo
making outgoing connections, e.g. to DNS. I can't ping anything from the box.

RDM contacted the hosting company. Since we don't know what the values
*should* be, I think there's little we can do until they wake up and take a
look.

We're busy moving to new hardware. The old hardware is very unstable and
crashes once or twice daily. We're keeping it alive with hardware resets
while we wait for the new DNS TTL we set to take effect.

I just reset it again, it should be up in a few minutes.

I actually noticed this last night on the PSF wiki, and it appears to
also be the case on the main wiki: if you use an incorrect username *or*
password, you'll get an HTTP 500.

Hello friends,

I resigned from the Fedora Project, that is why the link to the Python
for AIX is no longer working.
I am hosting the files now at the following position:
http://spreitzer.name/files/python/
Can you please update the Download link in your "others" section?

In the meanwhile I am brewing packages for 2.7 and 3.1 for AIX. Will
send you an update about that, once it is done.

best wishes,
Sascha

It tries to open up in itunes and I get a message in itunes saying:

"Your request could not be completed. The item you've requested is not currently available in the US store."

I get the same message if I try to search itunes for Pycon and add the stream from there. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Hello Pat,

This is now done. If future updates could be sent as plain text rather
than formatted text, with links separate, it would make future updates a
great deal easier.

Thanks Michael:

Also, will you be able to place the October 2010 link at the top of the web
page? There
also seems to be a statement about "duplicates" around John Pinner's name.

If it is not too much trouble, could you follow-up on the email I sent
regarding the logo
& url for Zimbio Ltd. (PSF Sponsor Member Web Page)?

Thanks again,
Pat

Attached is the logo we use on our own site (it's transparent..should look
fine on your white background).

Lemme know if there is anything else you may need from us.

Thanks again,

Message-ID: <201011172112.34909.ygingras@ygingras.net>

Greetings Python webmasters,
as a member of the program committee for ConFoo, I'm very grateful
that our call for speakers got to be mentioned on python.org last
year. I hope that it will also be possible to have a similar post
this year and I include a proposed text at the end of this email.
Feel free to edit it in anyway to match your editorial style.

We know that the date clash can be a problem but there is not much
that we can do about it at this point and we still believe with deep
conviction that ConFoo is a great opportunity to showcase how Python
is a very solid option for Web development and to introduce it to a
crowd that is more familiar with competing technologies.

Here is the proposed text:

ConFoo, a conferences showcasing many aspects of Web development,
including Python, Ruby, PHP, databases, and scaling, runs its call
for speakers until November 26th. More details on their website:
  http://confoo.ca/en/call-for-papers

I wonder if the feed has been removed for inactivity, as happened once

I assume this is an end-user problem and that python.org *can* be
reached by ipv6?

Hi,
I'm unable to connect to site while I have ipv6 stack on my computer.
You have AAAA DNS record for site and that address is not responding.

Please up http server on ipv6 address or delete dns record

I've run into this a couple of times and the solution I was always given was to disable IPv6 on my client system.

The answer is: yes, it can be reached via IPv6:

You can try one of the several looking glass servers around the
world: http://www.bgp4.as/looking-glasses

E.g. http://noc.eu.clara.net/lg.php

Router: US
Command: ping ip www.python.org

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 82.94.164.162, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 88/91/92 ms

Sorry, cut-n-paste error.

Router: Germany
Command: ping ipv6 www.python.org

This data is to be considered confidentional.

Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 2001:888:2000:D::A2, timeout is 2 seconds:
!!!!!
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 8/9/12 ms

Note that a lot of data centers, ISPs and end-user routers are not
prepared to handle IPv6.

Oops, it looks like someone removed/renamed them from us.pycon.org. I
run the www.pycon.org site but not us.pycon.org. However those graphics
and stylesheets were being pulled from the official us.pycon.org
website, which I guess changed their look.

I'll try to scrape up the original files and repoint www.pycon.org to
them instead.

Doug probably knows what happened to the originals.

Hi Andrew:

At the Sponsor member's request, could you please remove "Inc" from "Zimbio
Inc"
from the sponsor web page http://www.python.org/psf/. The company name
should
only read as: Zimbio

Thanks a whole lot,
Pat

PS. If you have any questions, please let me know.

I think you ran into a different problem. The OP complained that he
can't reach www.python.org over IPv6, even though his operating system
supports IPv6.

While this is likely true, it is not at all a reason to disable IPv6.
Applications should fall back to IPv4 transparently - no need to disable
IPv6.

However, many systems have IPv6 enabled today, yet can't reach
www.python.org, simply because they don't have IPv6 connectivity
from their ISP. Again, that alone is no reason to disable IPv6.

It's mostly unclear in what specific cases disabling IPv6 actually
helps. The known cases are
- old Opera versions (before Opera implemented the IPv4 fallback)
- bogus university network setups (students propagating
  misconfiguration in the network), and
- certain bogus Apple setups (in particular, broken airport
  base stations).

Regards,
Martin

The problem I had was a very long timeout while the IPv6 connection failed, leading to the perception that python.org was responding very slowly. Disabling IPv6 meant the client went directly to IPv4, bypassing the timeout.

I'm on a Mac, but don't have an airport base station. I would not be surprised if my ISP doesn't support IPv6, though, so maybe it's upstream from me.

I've done this.

This is not supposed to happen. The fallback should be immediate; no
packet should be sent even to the local ethernet. So there is likely
some misconfiguration in the local network going on.

Possibly. *Probably.* However, it was only a problem for python.org. It may be that most of the other sites being accessed just didn't have IPv6 addresses, but I don't know that for sure.
