I've added a wiki page describing the reflector script that posts
messages to the @pycon account, that will hopefully be helpful in case
someone needs to restart the script or resolve some problem with it.

Done; thanks!

One suggestion, to match past practice; the votes in your e-mail were
recorded like this:

> Approved, 10-0-0.

Older resolutions were recorded with a precise date, and where the
decision was taken:

> Approved 8-0-0 by IRC vote, October 12, 2009.

I don't think it's necessary to get the precise dates for the
May-August resolutions (if it really matters, it can be figured out
from the e-mail archives and meeting minutes), but if you or Doug want
to record more details in future, that would certainly be nice.

Further, I think we should remove the denied motion: I believe the
purpose of that page is to record only motions that passed, not those
which weren't approved, and no other denied motions have been recorded.
If people want to see denied motions they can go to the minutes.

Thanks Andrew:

Sounds like a very good idea to record the date & place of the board
resolution -- great catch.

Thanks,

Attached is the logo we use on our own site (it's transparent..should look
fine on your white background).

Lemme know if there is anything else you may need from us.

Thanks again,

Shouldn't we wait to add them until the membership is approved by a vote?

Hi Doug:

We can go ahead and add them now. In the past, we have added other pending
sponsor
members before the member election.

I believe we agreed some time ago that we would add pending members to
the web site before member approval. I'm sure Tim, acting as our memory,
will correct me if I am wrong.

 Steve

 To whom it may concern,

first of all: please excuse my low level english which is, as I know, far
away from perfect.

We are a medium sized ad agency situated in Berlin, Germany specializing in
web- and software devlopment.

Especially for our 3D projects (online as offline) and for larger web
portals we are using phyton since 1999,
so we belong not to the first, but, as I think, to the early users.

In our opinion we owe a part our success, which for us also means, that we
today are able to work today with 24 employees, to
Python and the large community which is developing and working on it since
several years.

That?s why we, even if we are not a big company, want to say thank you with
a yearly sponsoring of 2000 USD. We
are willing to raise the amount if we are growing and would be very happy if
you would accept us as a sponsor.

Please find attached the filled sponsoring form and - for the case that you
will accept us - our logo.

If there are any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

We are looking forward to your feedback.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Knappe

Message-ID: <4CADABB2.40907@voidspace.org.uk>

  Hello all,

Someone has emailed the webmaster alias about the "page not found" error
for this link:

http://www.python.org/doc/Intros.html

It is obviously an outdated link to a long-gone-page, but a quick google
search shows that this page is actually still quite widely linked to. I
can't see an obvious alternative page to redirect to, but if anyone can
think of one it would be good to redirect users to somewhere helpful.

All the best,

Michael Foord

We don't have any modifications to the code, but the Planet software
itself seems largely unmaintained; maintenance seems to have stopped in 2006, and our snapshot is dated 2005-05-15.

At one point I looked at switching to Sam Ruby's maintained fork of
the Planet software, Venus (http://intertwingly.net/code/venus/), but
fixing the templates wasn't trivial and I never finished that. It's
probably worth trying again.

I've made a minor formatting tweak to the @pycon Twitter reflector.
The reflected tweet was previously "<text> from @originaluser"; now
it's "-- @originaluser", which gives us two more characters! (Jesse
has been getting his URLs truncated a lot; unfortunately his ID is
@jessenoller, so the suffix takes more of a bite.)

I have been using the unicode black universal recycling symbol when
retweeting sometimes. One character only! Example:

   "? @originaluser"

The recycling symbol is codepoint 267B, 9851 in decimal, python escape
\u267B.

I've checked in a couple of jobs today but they are not showing up and it seems to be a glitch in SVN revision of the website; the current head revision is rev13410 but the website seems to be at rev13406..

Can anyone feed the pixies and persuade them to move along?

Is anyone on this list able to set this redirect up? I don't know how to
do it (other than by having a real webpage with a redirect meta tag
which I don't think is desirable for this case).

Hi,

The Industrial Light & Magic logo is 404 at http://python.org/about/success/ilm/

It probably worth running 404 scan for all python.org links.
Does anybody know services to do this on a monthly basis with
notifications posted here?

Thanks.

Thanks for pointing this out anatoly.

It is already an internal link, the missing image is:

http://python.org/images/ilmlogo.jpg

Anyone know why this is no longer on the site?

Sounds like a good idea. Not something I have experience with though.
(Actually at Resolver Systems we had a homegrown script that would crawl
the site and find broken links - it is at least two orders of magnitude
smaller than the python.org site though.)

All the best,

David Goodger renamed it to Lucasfilm_logo.png a year ago, not sure why.
Now the success page points to the correct logo.

It had to do with PSF sponsorship. ILM was a sponsor, but they
switched to LucasFilm sponsoring us.
I wasn't aware that the existing logo was used elsewhere, sorry.

No biggie -- we probably should have a 404 scanner to find this stuff
automatically.

http://linkchecker.sourceforge.net

It was recommended to me, I looked at the feature list, that's all I
know about it. but it looks like what we want.

I guess it makes sense to run it on the same hardware that is serving
the pages so that it isn't hammering the bandwidth.

How hard would it be to hook it into the site being updated?

How often is the site updated?

Another approach is to just analyze the log files: Apache knows exactly
when it generated an 404 error. Those could be split into errors with
a local referrer (i.e. our own broken links), with some external
referrer (where we broke somebody else's links), and no referrer (search
engines, bots, attackers).

Unlike linkchecker, this would not give use links to external sites
that we have and that got broken, and also unlike linkchecker, we
would find out if we break somebody else's links.

Martin

Thanks.
But I am still curious about what happened and how many hours tracker was down.
Is there a monitor to mail here if anything went offline?

Don't you find it strange that I am the only one who reported the
outage and I am not really active in Python development (this probably
the first time I opened tracker page in last 10 days)?

It is also interesting:
 * If the instability is repeatable
 * If it can be caused by security problem with Roundup
 * If we should offer more prominent way to report outages

Be assured, the tracker was not down for 10 days. When I notice that some
service is unavailable, I usually wait for a few hours before reporting it;
by that time you had already notified this list.

Hi folks,

Could someone add http://feeds.feedburner.com/aclark to the Python planet
feed list?

That is the feed for: http://blog.aclark.net/ where I am planning to post
more Python-centric content in the future (formerly Plone-centric).

Thanks,

Alex

  Hey Alex,

We'd be happy to do this. For adding to Planet Python we ask for a
*Python specific* feed. This is usually done by tagging relevant posts
with "python" and providing us with a tag / category specific feed.

Could you set this up and send the Python tagged feed URL to planet
<planet at python.org>

All the best,

Michael Foord

We have nagios monitoring on that machine. The only problem is, nagios
runs on nina, and nina is the host to the psf virtual host. So sometimes
they go down at the same time, although it usually goes for months
without any problems at all.

Also, it sometimes goes down at night, and I will only notice the next
morning.

But... we need to do something about that machine anyway. We need to
upgrade it, which basically means we need to get a new one, migrate it,
change the ip address, etc etc. Its on my todo list, but I need to do
the costing again and discuss it with Roch?.

I can answer the first of your questions immediately. The instability is
not repeatable. The only real thing I did find is that there appears to
be issues with the ext3 file system driver, that will occasionally cause
a corrupted journal and cause segfaults or it will report a full file
system when it isn't. I therefore dropped the journal, as it is in fact
more stable on ext2. To make matters worse, the same thing happened on
my laptop just a few days ago, with a fairly new kernel, so it seems
there is an as yet unreported bug in ext3. But I'm just speculating.

Izak

Not strange at all. Random things like that do happen.

Also, I don't know about you, but my network has been quite unreliable
across regions, oh, once or twice a month. Sometimes it fails on the
U.S., sometimes it fails on Europe, sometimes on south or east Asia
(and all too often the whole thing goes down locally; thank heaven the
public Internet is more reliable than my university's intranet!) If
others are experiencing the same, they may just wait 12-24 hours
before reporting a problem.

It's good that you report, but it's not that surprising that you were
the first. And you may or may not be the only reporter; I would guess
that private reports to me (or an admin-specific alias) outnumber
public reports to lists by 2:1 for the trackers I administer.

Forwarded from webmaster alias. I have no opinion one way or the other
about providing a link. It would be nice if their Python listings
emphasized Python as a primary skill, not just a secondary or "nice to have"
skill.

I updated the search engine list in the sidebar removing a site because, as it was pointed out, the quality of their results was not great returning positions that simply listed Python. If we add this one, should we restore the other as well?

Not necessarily. The recent sidebar update was what prompted me to comment
on link quality. If it looks okay to other people I see no reason to add
it. If it's as poor as the others, then I'd leave it off.

I don't think the external search links add a lot of value personally and am happy to see less rather than more... My vote would be not to add.

Agreed.

FWIW, unless they have a very focused python-specific section, I'd
advocate dumping all links to external job agencies / search engines /
etc...
