It *can* but doesn't by default. Here's an official to postmaster to delete
the catalog-sig mailing list but keep its archives.

Do you want to forward future postings to catalog-sig to forward to
distutils-sig, or should we just let them bounce?

I've already started this process. The old list has not been deleted, but is fully locked down from getting any more posts made to it, and the auto-responder has been turned on to tell everyone that all new posts should be made to the other list.

Assuming that folks still want the archives available, and therefore we leave this in place as a Mailman list that does not accept any new incoming messages, I'm not sure how we would set it up to forward all incoming posts to a different list.

So far as I know, only outstanding action that remains is to decide what to do with the list of subscribers to the old list. My understanding is that most of them are already subscribed to the new list, so the easiest thing to do might be to do a mass unsubscribe, and included in that message would be an invitation to join the new list if the recipient has not already done so.

Other possibilities would include doing the equivalent of a "sort -u" on the combined subscriber list, remove all the recipients who are already on the new list, and then do a mass subscribe of the remainder to the new list. At that point, we could do a mass unsubscribe for everyone from the old list, and not have to worry about inviting people to join the new one.

Anyway, I'm still waiting on feedback for that. I want to do whatever we can to support the community in the way they want to be supported, but I'm not sure what type of method that this particular community would want applied to them.

It's a bit of a hack, but what you do is delete the old list (probably after
backing up the lists/catalog-sig directory just in case). Then you need to
add Postfix aliases to forward from catalog-sig to distutils-sig. Finally,
you need to add catalog-sig at python.org as an acceptable alias, and you might
want to add an autoresponder text to the posting address to inform people of
this, although you can't currently discriminate between postings to
catalog-sig and postings to distutils-sig.

Boy, this should would make a good Mailman 3 feature!

Given that both mailing lists are gated on Gmane, I think it's enough to get
the word out about the switch, and let people opt-in to distutils sig. They
can always catch up on Gmane if they miss something.

Hi folks --

A couple weeks ago at PyCon we announced the "preview" of the new
python.org: http://preview.python.org/. You'll recall that the PSF put
out an RFP and had a bid process; our work has been the result of
that.

We'd announced it in a number of places, but as Aahz just pointed out,
I forgot to ask for feedback on the site here. I'm really sorry --
that's a major oversight.

It's very much still a work-in-progress -- major sections are not
done, and most of the content is still lipsum -- but I'm interested in
any and all feedback anyone's got. There's a feedback form on every
page which you can use, or feel free to email me directly.

If anyone has specific concerns about specific parts of the site and
want to talk in depth I'd be happy to set up a
phone/skype/hangout/whatever chat. I'm more or less free all next
week, so just let me know.

Thanks, and again sorry that I failed to announce this here.

Jacob

I'll prefix this with: I don't believe there was any malicious intent in
this, I hope the process was purely an attempt at preventing bike
shedding...

That said, I remember finding the initial process extremely frustrating,
whereby we (current site maintainers) would ask a question or make a
comment on the proposed new design (in fact, I believe this may have
been the tendering process) and get nothing back but a blank "thankyou
for your feedback" from Jesse.

I'll again say that I hope that was with the best of intentions, but it
was pretty infuriating that the time; nothing says "f*&( you" quite like
feeling totally excluded from a process, when you've put a fair amount
of work into maintaining a site. I can only give my perspective here,
but I suspect that is the start of where Aahz is coming from...

...wind on to implementation. Again, I will prefix this with: I trust
Jacob wholeheartedly and believe he will likely go way beyond what he's
being paid to do. But...

I only found out about the progress when I noticed a mail referring to
preview.python.org and mailed Jacob directly to ask about the interface
for the job board, by then it felt like a bit of a done deal...
(for the job board, it turns out its not, for which feel very relieved :-)

What might have left the maintainers feeling more engaged would have
been some combination of 'svn log', 'grep -v chrisw', 'sort -u' to see
who the most common maintainers were and reaching out to them directly.
Likewise, maybe a grep of the archives of the pydotorg-www list (I'm
thinking of all the work Michael Foord does for planet.python.org, dunno
if that's affected by the site rebuild, and Aahz did with the job board
pre-screening).

That said, I don't know how much effort would be perceived in engaging
with the guys who do the current work, and I don't know where to look to
see if that was considered. (Transparency is tough with Foundations and
the like, I know...)

Anyway, this is all water under the bridge, we are where we are and I'll
be sorry to see Aahz go. Aahz, what could happen to change your mind?

cheers,

Chris

I'd imagine most of the people here are interested in how content is
created, edited and deleted.

Where/how can we play with that and see how it'll work?

I'm thinking perhaps a couple of weeks, at least for the online
editing parts. There are some pretty big missing gaps so far, and we
need to get some documentation written.

The offline editing system likely somewhat longer, maybe a
couple-three weeks past that.

I'll make sure to ping you, and the lists, for beta testing once we're
happy with it internally.

I think pinging the pydotorg lists is enough. People managing the
site content will be the ones subscribed to these lists.

For testing purposes, could you setup a separate system, say
stage.python.org ?

Related to this: Are you planing for a staging system for the site ?
(offline as we have with the current system or online; doesn't really
matter).

PS: I still owe you a reply to the review answer you sent a couple
of days ago. Will follow up next week.

PPS: I think you're doing a good job in getting the pydotorg folks
back involved. Keep up the good work !

Thanks,

My IMHO. Good sides like design choice, as always, are missing from these
rants.

1. Top menu.
Are there any public stats about how many times every top link is clicked?
Everyone is curious, and this also a starting point for usability study
until
the design is fixed in stone.
Education and Docs carry all the same meaning for me.
Community deserves to be placed as a last item on that menu.
With all respect to PSF that I have, PSF info is not that important for
site
users as community stuff like planet. And everyone determined to know
about who is Python "powered by", can look into the footer anyway.

2. Excessive navigation for items already present in top menu
Docs and documentation takes five blocks on main page.
  Jobs takes two blocks.
  Downloads take three blocks.

3. No login/profiles

4. Site is not open source, which is strange and alienating for open source
folks. There is no better resource to learn than a working code.

5. Python -> Downloads as the most frequently visited should be bold and at
the right (easy to spot for returning visitors)
"Frequently visited" should not a be a subjective judgement.

6. The blank space to the right of Python logo should contain a six words
phrase about what's what?
This is for people who is not familiar with the site.

7. Success stories bearing thumbnail for each story are more interesting
than a raw text.

8. It is more intuitive for me to control top sections with background
color coding, not with the menu color coding.

9. No API

10. Horizontal scrollbar in Chrome.

I guess that design is all feedback that's possible to be provided for now.
Other questions are hard to discuss without something already working. For
example, the documentation needs an online edit / review system. It is not
even clear if this feature is planned, and how it should be added.

One major flaw is that there is absolutely no place for development. The
key point IMHO around which everything else should be based in open source
process. I understand that commercial companies are not used to customers
who aim to provide that kind of activities, but PSF as a product owner
should have prioritized this aspect unless it wants to make Python
development an inhouse process.

If anyone has specific concerns about specific parts of the site and
> want to talk in depth I'd be happy to set up a

I'd be interested to know about the usability development strategy. Right
now it looks like just a catalog of links. If no usability study is planned
on this phase, I can propose some stuff. Also something about Jobs.

Thanks, and again sorry that I failed to announce this here.

The positioning of the whole process could be more public and community
centric. =) I am more than inclined that there are many people out there
who'd like to know the process of building such complicated site as *.
python.org from scratch to exchange the experiences. I am even sure that
people will fund the open development through kickstarter campaign to learn
about A/B testing, usability study techniques, role of statistics and arts.
I am also sure that people will be happy to help with development of
reusable components that may be required to build python.org

Also, Sprints and donation system for sprints, for sponsored development
and other initiatives. I'd like to see that platform. Not just a new web
2.0 design.

Take this with a grain of salt. It is good that somebody works on this.
Good luck with your quest, and feel free to contact me for details.

There are too many existing tools that make use of ?-h? for other things
(e.g. ?hostname to connect to?) for me to expect it to mean ?help? by
default.

If I'm expecting an option to be a short name for ?help?, it would be
?-??.

Yes, I do expect it.
(and I find it quite annoying when it doesn't)

Hi Andre:

My name is
Joanne Daudier, and I'm with
LearnStreet, an online platform for
computer
programming education.

We are creating a
new tool <http://www.learnstreet.com/teacher> to help computer science
teachers teach Python
 with ease
.
The tool includes a teacher dashboard, an autograder, practice exercises,
projects, and lessons on programming languages and computer science topics.

We believe that every student in every school should have the opportunity
to learn to code, so we've created these free resources for educators
around the world. *Could you help us with our mission by adding
LearnStreet's teacher pilot program to the edu-sig list?*

Thank you!

Hi Andr?,

I think you should ask on the edu-sig for a new maintainer. I've removed
your name from the bottom of the page.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Andre Roberge announced on the edu-sig mailing list that he can no longer
maintain the edu-sig page. I'd be willing to help in maintaining that page
and am writing you to express interest in doing this.

Yours faithfully,
Tobias Siebenlist

Andr?:

Can you endorse this request ? If so, I think we should give Tobias
access to the pydotorg system so that he can make any necessary
changes.

Tobias was one of 5 or 6 people that expressed interest in maintaining the
page after I announce that I was no longer able to maintain it. After the
initial expression of interest from Tobias and others, I explained what was
required. Since Tobias has shown the initiative to follow up on this
list, I would endorse him.

Ok, thanks. +1 on giving Tobias access.
