Does this merit a de-editorification?

I think getting into an edit war wiki admins is probably worth making
the user come back and ask nicely for permission to edit again, don't
you think?

If you look at the editing history of the page, both "pythonguru" and
"pythonspot" are literally fighting over the top listing on that page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Programmers?action=info

I believe both deserve a cooling off period and the listing should
be reordered alphabetically as it was some time ago:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Programmers?action=recall&rev=110

(perhaps also documenting this policy at the top of the page)

Watched this with equal parts amusement and... well, not. Agree with recent comments, tho alphabetical isn't great either, fwiw (spoken as a guy with a surname starting with 'w'... and remembering the phone book days with AAAAABest Auto).

Being an editor isn't an end in itself. I'm trusting that you have
some other edits you're planning on doing; you're now an editor.

Hi there,

WE have had a number of complaints about irresponsible (self-serving)
updates from the pythonguru account on the Beginners page. Despite the
posting of a notice on the page warning about possible consequences, the
updates continue, so we'd like to block the account, please.

I agree we should do it. I'm not sure who manages the Wiki but, going by
the front page, an email to pydotorg-www at python.org seems to be the right
thing.

Anatoly,

we have warned you many times and over year long periods. You
have caused so many people so many unproductive hours of
volunteer work time that it's become unbearable.

I'm sorry to say, but you have used up all the patience
we've had with you.

We wish you luck with your future endeavors.

Thanks,

Hi! The editors group is for Wiki accounts of people who want to
contribute to editing the wiki. Are you looking at something you want
to edit in the wiki? If so, what?

And more importantly, we need to know what your wiki account name is.

We normally like to hear of a proposed edit that you intend to make
(it's a good way to distinguish genuine contributors from bots that
just want to spam the site), but I've gone ahead and made you an
editor.

this user has just splattered a bunch of spam onto the wiki. I've
removed the user and killed some of the pages, but the response time is
slow and I don't have time to chase the rest. Hopefully someone else can
find time to sweep up more of the mess.

presumably the user is still "logged in" and able to perpetrate more
mischief.

I removed the remaining pages, put the user on the block list
and added quickbooks to the bad content page.

I guess we've learned a lesson here.

Yep. If in doubt, do what the banks do, and pretend that the
bureaucracy is so important that we absolutely HAVE to have more proof
of ID before you can open a depositing account. (No, I'm not jaded or
anything. Banks are fine. Nothing wrong with their policies.)

I'm not sure I parse your email correctly.

The lesson here is that even with this much less anonymous
approach to getting editing rights compared to textchas,
we do run into people who openly betray our trust in them.

Don't let this get you down, though, Chris.
You're doing an excellent job !
Please keep up the good work.

It's easy enough to fix such vandalism and so far, I think
the approach is working out much better than anything we've
had before.

I was in two minds - do I ask for more proof that there'll be legit
edits, or keep the turnaround time low to encourage edits? And clearly
I made the wrong choice this time. Stuff happens.

Thanks. I know of just one other time an editor has been de-authorized
since the change to this system; even if there are as many again that
I'm not aware of, that's still an excellent ratio.

I'd say: keep going with the same approach. The signal/noise
ratio has been excellent so far :-)

If we get more such cases, we can still start requiring
a description of the intended edit. Most legit users
do send this already, so it would probably not increase
the turnaround time.

Indeed.

Hi __all__!

I was hoping to make an addition to the Python Decorator Library. I wrote a
memoizing decorator that uses Pickle for performance improvements across
multiple executions. The code is documented, conforms to PEP8, and is about
170 total lines.

Here's Github <https://github.com/brmscheiner/memorize.py> if anyone wants
to take a look. If the code needs to be refactored, I'm all ears. Last
thing: my username is brmscheiner.

Best,

Ben Scheiner

Is this something on the Python wiki? If you're looking to make
changes to someone else's code, you'll need to post that to where they
can see your code.

Yes, the list's primary purpose is (now - wasn't always) the wiki. But
I'm not familiar with every page in it, so I didn't instantly
recognize the page name. Thanks for clarifying.

You're now an editor. Thank you for contributing to the wiki!

Because it's a good way to distinguish legitimate human editors from
spambots. Most people who create wiki accounts do so because they want
to make a particular edit, so it isn't usually much cost. Spambots, on
the other hand, aren't thinking of constructive edits, so this is a
challenge.

And if the bots start making constructive edits...

Hi Charles!

You can use the web site just fine without being able to actually edit

Hi,

Edit suggestion on the following page:
https://wiki.python.org/moin/Generators

> Here, we compose a square generator with the takewhile generator, to generate squares less than 100

> #add squares less than 100

The above example requires an import of itertools. Hence I suggest the
following addition preceding the example:

> from itertools import count, takewhile

It took me a while to search this out in google! Being a newbie, I feel
that the aforementioned amendment smoothens my uphill learning curve.

Thanks,

Definitely worth doing. Do you have a Wiki user account? You could

Sure, no probs! Done.

What does "contributing member" mean, incidentally? I had a quick look
at https://www.python.org/psf/members/ and didn't see your name. It's
beginning to dawn on me that I know nearly as much about how the PSF
operates as I do about the PSU, which emphatically does not exist.

Evidently only members of some classes are listed at

You're obviously not important enough to be listed there :)

The above page was what we (the PSF) used before the bylaws changes
that opened up the PSF for everyone and allowed self certification
as contributing or managing member.

When we introduced the new bylaws, all the existing PSF members
became fellows and so that's the membership class listed on
the above page.

I guess we could list the new contributing / managing members
as well, perhaps on a separate page which gets auto-generated
in some way. The problem here is that these are self-certified
and, AFAIK, we still use the (temporary) process that we put
in place in for this:

http://pyfound.blogspot.de/2015/02/enroll-as-psf-voting-member.html

The python.org system does have a flag for setting those
membership classes as well, however, I'm not sure whether
this is exposed to the users somewhere or whether it's
only used internally by Betsy and Ewa to track the membership
classes.

Finally, listing all basic members is not possible, since we
have more then 4000 :-)

The membership is listed on the profile pages, e.g.

Hi,

The wiki <https://wiki.python.org/moin/IntegratingPythonWithOtherLanguages>
is missing some options:
1) http://pybee.org/voc/ - Converts python to java byetcode
2) https://www.py4j.org/index.html - Allows python code to access jvm
objects.
3) https://github.com/chrishumphreys/p2j - An old python to java
translator. Nice for reference.

Thanks,

Shay Gover

And Jpype wiki page <https://wiki.python.org/moin/JPype> links to the old
version. They have a new page on github:
https://github.com/originell/jpype

Would you like to add all of these? All you need to do is create a
Wiki editor account, and I can give you permission to make these
changes.
