Hi,

My name is Rahul, and I head up business development efforts for Software On Demand. We recently launched our platform, a software marketplace, where customers can purchase products on a monthly subscription.

I am taking an educated guess here, based on your online profile, you appear to be an appropriate person to connect with for your software on Cnet... or might at least point me in the right direction. I?d like to speak with someone from your company who is responsible for handling strategic tie-ups.

If that?s you, are you open to a fifteen minute call to discuss how Software On Demand can specifically help your business? If that's not you, can you please put me in touch with the right person?

If you wish to know more about us, come visit us on www.softwareondemand.co or join our skype dev studio here.

Thank you very much and we hope to receive a favourable response soon.

Best Regards,

Do you know where it ought to be pointing? We can give you editing
access to correct it, or to put a note saying that the site's down -
all you need to do is create a user account and tell us the name.

Not sure why "a few" pages, but sure, whatever is appropriate. Go

Hello there,

I'm trying to send some patch upstream to PyPa/PYPI-legacy and it says
to look at the following page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/CheeseShopDev

Which is extremely out of date.

Is there any way I can get my account (mbussonn) to have edit access
to this page ?

I would like to (at least) add a warning that some of these
instruction are not worth following,
at best update it a bit to be more useful.

I would be grateful,

Thanks,

Sure. I've made you an editor, but be aware that PyPI is moving stuff
around, so I don't know how much is going to change. (I don't manage
any of that kind of thing - it's just something I happened to hear.)

Sure, we have a few pages where companies and freelancers can
list their offerings. I was just wondering where you wanted
to add them, since we sometimes get requests where people are
trying to spam the wiki in various ways and your request was
not specific enough.

So could you please let us know where you intend to make
edits ?

Thanks.

Hi everyone,

My name is Mariatta and I live in Vancouver, Canada.
I hear about this mailing list from Guido.

I'm interested to contribute to pydotorg project. I've been developing
using python for about 6 years, and mostly I've been working with Django
framework. I noticed pydotorg is using django project, so I hope I can be
of use here :)

I will start looking into the github repo and readthedocs later today.
I'll also appreciate any suggestion or direction of where and how to get
started with this project.

Thanks

Hi Mariatta,

Welcome to the list. As you have probably seen from the archives it isn't
currently terribly active, but there's no reason why a new recruit with
some enthusiasm can't change that. I personally am too busy to do much but
reply to odd inquiries that come through to webmaster at python.org (another
list you are welcome to join, by the way), but I like to monitor the
traffic here.

When the site was rewritten some years ago it was the intention that it be
much more open to community input, but sadly there don't appear to be many
active maintainers now. It would be great to see that position change, and
the site is implemented with fairly well-known technologies precisely to
make technical contribution easier and more likely. So I think it's likely
you can be a big help, and many thanks for offering.

regards
Steve

Hi,

I'm having trouble installing pydotorg locally on my personal macbook.
Wondering if anyone will be able to help with this? Not sure if this is the
right place to ask. I can also create a ticket in github if that's
preferred.

Anyway, I'm following the instructions for Manual Setup, as described in
this page: https://pythondotorg.readthedocs.io/install.html

my steps:

git clone git://github.com/python/pythondotorg.git

cd pythondotorg

python3.4 -m venv venv

pip install -r dev-requirements.txt

After this point, I see an error.

Here is a snippet:

Requirement already satisfied (use --upgrade to upgrade): oauthlib>=0.6.2

Does anyone have any ideas of what's going on? Is there a problem with my
machine perhaps? I'm using Macbook OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 if that matters.

Thanks. I would really appreciate any help with this.

Hi Mariatta,

I can't ever remember getting the whole deal installed. From
https://github.com/unbit/uwsgi/issues/1056, though, I'd suggest it looks
like a problem with a MacOS Build. Since I remember the installation taking
place on an Ubuntu Vagrant box I'm wondering whether the absence of such
box might be the problem?

You won't need uWSGI in development so you can safely remove or
uncomment the uWSGI line in requirements.txt.

Ideally, we should have a separate requirements.txt for
production-only dependencies, but we need to make sure that we won't
break anything in deployment process. I will try to do it this week.

Thanks!

Thanks Steve and Berker!
I uncommented uWSGI from requirements.txt, and no longer seeing the error.

I've never used Vagrant before. Guess now is the time to learn how to use
it :)

Thanks.

Yes, using Vagrant would save you from additional troubles like
https://pythondotorg.readthedocs.io/install.html#freetype-not-found-on-osx
But if uWSGI was the only problematic step, I'd say don't waste time
with Vagrant now :)

Yeah, the anti-spam rules were changed a little while ago. Instead of
playing the arms race with captchas, we now have humans to verify
humans. Since I'm satisfied that you're a human, I've made you an
editor, which should mean you can edit that again.

Hi,

I've taught a python course with some positive results to high school
students with zero experience in programming. Now I am making these course
materials (slides in English and lecture videos in Cantonese) freely
available as a contribution back to the community (
www.istudycenter.org/summercourses/programming-for-kids/python-materials).
I'd like to add a link to it from the Wiki page (
https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/NonProgrammers), but I couldn't
create a wiki account: it kept saying "no response from gateway".

Would you please help? All I need is to create the link, so if you would
help then I don't even need to create an account.

Many thanks

Easier for you to become an editor. The "no response" message suggests
that there's an issue with the server, but if you've managed to create
a user account, I can give you editing powers.

M-A, does the server need to get some kind of kick in its behind?

It occasionally does. Let me know if the problems persists,
then I can issues a restart of Apache.

Hi,

Thanks for the report! django-links is hosted on PyPI. PyPI just
displays what the module maintainer put in their setup.py file so we
can't do much here. This needs to be reported to django-links
maintainers.

Hi,

My username is BryanVandeven

I noticed that there is no mention of Bokeh (http://bokeh.pydata.org/en/latest/index.html) anywhere on:

	https://wiki.python.org/moin/NumericAndScientific/Plotting

Bokeh is a large, popular (80k installs/mo) BSD licensed library for data visualization and data applications in Python that targets modern browsers. It has had accepted tutorials for several years at PyData, SciPy, EuroPython, PyBay, and other conferences.

I intend to add a description along with a links to docs, GH, and other relevant resources.

Thanks,

Bryan

Yes, thanks Bryan. Bokeh definitely deserves inclusion, and there are many
rich links about it already, particularly in the Jupyter environment.

The problem is, as "webmasters" we have very little time to edit content,
and so we rely on community members to edit what they can. Welcome, and
thank you again for taking the time and having the interest to help others.

Just to clarify, I wasn't complaining about the absence. The site instructions said to provide a summary of the proposed edits in the email request.

Thanks,

So, uhh.... What's the user name :)

I kinda need that before I can give you any sort of editing powers.
Also, it'd be nice to know what edits you're planning to make, if you

You can do that yourself! In my last email to you, I mentioned that
I'd made you an editor. That should mean that you can edit the user
groups page. If you can't, please let us know (including a link to the
page, preferably), and we can look further into it.

Hi Andrea!

You should be able to create an account without help; it just won't have
editing powers until one of us grants that. So you can pick your user name
first, then come to us with that information.

Thank you for your interest in contributing!

Hi all,

Elise & Greg from Yhat here. We'd love to add our IDE, Rodeo, to the list
of available resources on the beginner's guide of the wiki.

If that seems appropriate please add my username to the EditorsGroup.

Cheers,

Next, install the Python interpreter on your computer. This is the program
that reads Python programs and carries out their instructions; you need it
before you can do any Python programming. Mac OSX distributions from 10.3
(Panther) and up, include a version of Python, which, although it can be as
much as two years out of date, may be suitable for beginning. Linux
distributions also frequently include Python and it is readily upgraded.
Jetbrain has a software called Pycharm and you can download it for free.
See Pycharm download-- Yhat provides software for doing data science in
Python called Rodeo that you can also download for free. See Rodeo download

What do you folks think? Is that just spam, or is it legit? Anyone
know what Rodeo is and how useful it is to a beginner?

Dunno, but until we can get Wing IDE on that page (made by a company that's
supported the Python community for almost 20 years) I personally don't
think he should be in with a shout. PyCharm is pushing its luck ...

I didn't reply to it, figuring it was just opportunist bullshit. I am quite
prepared to admit my approach may be overly dismissive.

Those who are familiar with my responses from webmaster@ know that I can go
to considerable lengths to get new community members on board. Though I am
not inclined to try in this particular case I would welcome it if someone
else had the time and thought it worthwhile. There's just a chance the
author really wants to give, so I am loath to completely write him off,
just too busy to try.

Steve

Hi Elise and Greg!

The page you're looking at is aimed at beginners, so it should
minimize the number of extra programs to be downloaded. Listing all
the possible IDEs and toolkits would make this page completely
unwieldy. However, there are other places on the wiki where these
kinds of listings can be found, and you may want to consider
mentioning Rodeo there instead.

Thanks for your interest in the Python wiki!

Thanks for the quick reply! That makes sense.

We'll take a look around the wiki and see if there's a more appropriate fit.

She won't have seen your post (although she could dig into the
archives - they're public AIUI), so I'm expecting that my post was
what she saw as the public face of the pydotorg wiki.

Greetings,

I am wondering if you would consider listing the 2016 Plone Conference (https://ploneconf.org <https://ploneconf.org/>) on your list of upcoming Python conferences (https://www.python.org/community/workshops/ <https://www.python.org/community/workshops/>)? We?ll be offering two days of trainings, three days of talks, and two days of sprints on Plone, Pyramid, and other related Python web technologies.

I?d be happy to answer any questions you might have about our conference,

Yours

Oh, I?m sorry to bother you. The page I referenced actually suggests that I write to this address if I want an event listed. I?ll look at the repo and see if I can accomplish this with a pull request or something.

Thanks

Sounds good to me! However, we don't have control over that; mainly,
we manage the wiki:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/

You may want to look at the GitHub repository:

https://github.com/python/pythondotorg

I'm not familiar with that side of things, though, so I can't help with details.

Is not a bother! And, hmm. I'm not sure what ought to be done there;
it could be that the address needs to be updated, or it could be
lifting something from the wiki or something. Hopefully the GitHub
repo has the info somewhere.

I've added the conference to the page (this only requires editing
permissions on the website, no github PRs :-)).

If you would like to announce the conference, please see the URL

Interesting, the sites are different, but at least
https://pythonspot.com/ and http://pythonprogramminglanguage.com/
use the same Amazon affiliate code.

Chris and others: What should we do about this ? Remove them as
well ?

All sites are anonymous, they all use affiliate links to
Udemy or Amazon to make money and the content is mostly similar.

Yeah, this is just a fraudulent attempt of making money by copying some
free docs.

Looking at https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Programmers?action=info,
it looks like they were in some sort of an edit race. I'd vote for
removal (you may also want to revoke pythonspot's editor access.)

I would declare an official stance that you get one link, but with the
caveat that we're all only human - violations might not always be
noticed immediately. (That's just to silence the "but Daaaaaad, you
didn't spank Timmy when HE did that" complaint.) Once it's known that
someone's put multiple sites in, we'll remove all but one, and
possibly all. So, yeah, I'd remove the spares. If, as Guido says,
they're trying to make money off free docs, I'd remove all those
links.

Message-ID: <CAC6nz_uSkbBaQm7PEbWkF18xpTG6QihuF8CSLAapEc=WYR1ivA@mail.gmail.com>

Hi,

I can't even seem to sign up for an account (which, from what I've read
would still not be sufficient).

I was hoping to add a Python 3 compatible implementation of the proposed
'irange' function (https://wiki.python.org/moin/RangeGenerator):

def irange(start, stop=None, step=1):
""" Generator for a list containing an arithmetic progression of
integers.
        range(i, j) returns [i, i+1, i+2, ..., j-1]; start (!) defaults to
0.
When step is given, it specifies the increment (or decrement).
        For example, range(4) returns [0, 1, 2, 3]. The end point is
omitted!
These are exactly the valid indices for a list of 4 elements.
    """
    if step == 0:
raise ValueError("irange() step argument must not be zero")

    if stop is None:
        stop = start
        start = 0
    continue_cmp = (step < 0) * 2 - 1

    while ((start > stop) - (start < stop)) == continue_cmp:
        yield start
        start += step

If someone would be willing to edit this page for me I'd be grateful.
Unless, of course, this has already been implemented in Python 3, thus
making my effort pointless :)

Hi Mark!

It's not sufficient, true, but we try to be fairly responsive here at
granting editor access to legit people. What happens when you try to
sign up? Sometimes the server drags its feet for one reason or
another, and one of the admins needs to kick it in the behind.

The default range object is most of this, except that it's reiterable
rather than being a one-shot generator. You could probably do this:

def irange(*args): return iter(range(*args))

The range object retains its endpoints, rather than creating all the
integers up-front, so it has the efficiency needed for large ranges.
If there's something that irange does and range doesn't, then feel
free to describe that use-case on the wiki (once you manage to get an
account).

Ok, here's what I did:

1. disabled pythonspot as well
2. added note that we don't want spammers to fill the listings
   on that page
3. moved the entries of both pythonspot and pythonguru to the
end of the list (reinstantiated the pythonguru listing which
pythonspot had removed); removed duplicate pythonspot entries
and only kept the pythonspot.com one around

If one of the two want to make edits, they can ask for change
requests on this list, but I don't think we should give them
editor rights again for the time being - at least not until we
get the feeling that they have learned the lesson.

If you want to apply changes to this page or other wiki pages,
please post them here. For the time being, we'll leave your
editor status revoked.

We have also revoked pythonspot's editor status and fixed the
page to list both your and one of pythonspot sites at the end
of the list.

Thanks.

Hi there. The first step to becoming an editor is to create an
account. Can you do that please, and tell us what name you've chosen?

Hi, I'm a python developer and was hoping to make the following edit on the
wiki

The page

https://wiki.python.org/moin/Distutils/Tutorial

shows an example using distutils with an invalid "license" value.

license = "GNU GPLv3",

I was hoping to update this to the valid SPDX license identifier (
