I have an account on wiki.python.org - with my user name of 'AnthonyFlury'

I am a contributing member of the PSF - and I wanted to create a home Page.

Each time I navigate to the 'Create your home page' link - I get a page
which states I am unable to edit this page.

Is it an issue currently with the wiki, or more likely an issue with my
permissions on the wiki.

Hi Anthony,

First of all, welcome to the Wiki and thanks for your interest. I've added
your username to the Editors group, which should be all that's required. If
not, please do let us know.

PythonAnywhere.?? Could I get access in order to do that?

yes, when I go look that page is marked differently:

#acl TrustedEditorsGroup:read,write,delete,revert All:read

I, at least don't know why that is, but since that is not a common
setting, I presume there's a reason. If someone else does not pop up
with comments, one of us can stuff your changes in there.

I guess that page might be particularly prone to being filled up with
spam....? anyway, thanks!? The changes I'd like to make are on the
PythonAnywhere line, and it is to change the Python version to "2.7,
3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7" and the last update to "2018-09".

All the best,

Giles

I suppose this was added due to spamming in the past. With the
approach we're using now, this is no longer needed. You can
remove it.

Gah, this area is a bit confused.

So we have a page FreeHosts, a page NonCommercialHosting, a page
OtherCommercialHosts, and a page SpecializedCommercialHosts. All of them
end with a reference to PythonHosting, a page which does not exist.

As a bit of cleanup I'd like at least to remove the link to
PythonHosting, unless that's something we should resurrect from whatever
dumpster it went into, and add an introductory line to those of the four
that don't have one giving the definition of the category (specialized
and non-commercial have one, free and other-commercial don't).

Or... we could do something different.... anyone else who wants to dive
in, please do.

It's well possible that this page was lost in the wiki attack
some years ago (it redirects to PythonHosting).

This is the last version I could find on archive.org:

https://web.archive.org/web/20130809232216/http://wiki.python.org:80/moin/PythonHosting

Perhaps you could revive it ?!

I'd love to dive in and help, but as someone with very much of a vested
interest in what those pages look like, I probably am not the right
person to do that.

That said, something else I've noticed is that there appear to be a
number of dead links.?? On FreeHosts:

  * Frihost times out
  * WikiWikiWeb.de gives a 503 error

On SpecializedCommercialHosts:

  * INGATE occurs twice, as INGATE and Ingate
  * RSHosting occurs four times, as RSHosting, RSHostingUK, UK Reseller
Web Hosting and Reseller Hosting.? The latter two link to 404 pages.
  * 30loops appears to go to a spam page
  * ZyrixHost goes to a domain registrar's holding page
  * Amaze goes to a recruitment company
  * Centada Python Hosting -- domain no longer exists
  * Computer Frontiers -- goes to a default Apache install
  * CornerHost.com -- goes to a spam page
  * Development Island -- has shut down
  * DjangoDomain -- domain no longer exists
  * Diginode Networks -- no page
  * High Speed Rails -- domain registrar's holding page
  * Hospedagem de Sites -- times out.? (HomeHost - Hospedagem de sites
    works, however)
  * Hub-Hub -- goes to a site that appears to be for creating websites
with no technical knowledge, which is quite the opposite of what it
used to be.? Apparently is pending renewal or deletion as of 2009...
  * Quaxim -- domain no longer exists
  * Dedicated Web Servers -- 404 page, root page on the domain does not
    respond
  * Sonologic -- has shut down
  * Wikihosting.nl - 404 on front page
  * UK Dedicated Hosting - PHP error
  * WebNet Hosting -- some kind of login thing on the front page

A number of others went to 404 pages, but all had links that took you to
what -- at a quick glance -- looked like a hosting company, so I've not
noted them.

I'd be happy to sort the above out if it's OK with you.

All the best,

Giles

(Steve Holden says glowing things so we trust you anyway :))

I've restored the PythonHosting page from the internet archive with just
minimal formatting, so that link should work again now.

That's very kind of him :-)?? I've removed the ones that go to domain
registrar holding pages, don't have IPs, or have error tracebacks on the
front page.?? I haven't fixed the ones where the specific link on the
wiki is a 404; in each case where that happened, there was a link on the
404 page that took me to a front page that was clearly for a hosting
company of some kind.

I spotted that the link to "Specialized Commercial Hosts" had an extra
"]" in the URL, so I've fixed that too.

whether any action is required.
