The timeout seems to be occurring a lot. so we do "know about it", I'm
not sure anyone was yet convinced it wasn't just transient busy-ness.

I think this is evidence there is something that does need attention.

Well, I've probably been trying between 10 and 20 times today without
succeeding. So I'm pretty sure that something needs to be done. I've
created a local Python user group, and I'd like to "formalize" it by adding
it to the wiki.

I have restarted apache on the VM. I guess we will need a cleanup
of the users on the moin instance. The 144k users together with the
underpowered VM and frequent spikes in activity by bots trying to
register accounts are causing those delays.

It seems to me that the Wiki is in need of some tender loving care. Given
the outdated nature of Moin's design, I'm wondering what might be the best
way t bring it up to date. Does anyone have specific knowledge in this area?

I don't know if you are aware, but Pakt has been publishing (apparently)
their complete list of Python books on the wiki, adding new titles
to the top of the page in an apparently automated way:

Not only that, but they removed older entries from the page:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/AdvancedBooks?action=info&max_count=100&offset=200

e.g. the Python Cookbook is no longer listed.

I don't think the purpose of the wiki should be SEO and even less
removing competitor links.

I think we should take action here, e.g. restore the old version of
the page and add a single link to the Pakt website instead of
the current endless list of entries.

deleted links, and stop these automated updates.

This has been an ongoing point of discussion with Packt Publishing and
the wiki (search the list archives for the full details). A while ago,
a hint was dropped that Packt should perhaps consider becoming a
sponsor, rather than continuing to add more and more free listings for
their myriad books. It may be worth revisiting that point.

I don't, however, believe that whether they became a sponsor should alter

Hi folks -

Pakt is doing a Humble Bundle promotion for the next two weeks featuring
the PSF as one of the charities.

Beyond that, we should chat with them about their wiki usage and possible
sponsorship, they are not current PSF sponsors.  We will reach out to them.

Certainly, content should not be removed, that may have been a mistake
maybe?

Do we have firm guidelines on where to add a new entry if you're adding
to a list?  By date of entry (i.e. top or bottom)? Alphabetical? etc.  I
believe a few wiki pages do state a preference, but the book pages of
today do not.  I don't look at books any longer, but scanning over the
introductory and andvanced books pages leaves me with the impression
this would not be very useful to anyone, it's just a seemingly endless
list with no organization at all.  It's better where the top page splits
out specialist topics, but there probably aren't enough of those buckets
now, and Packt seem happy to put everything on the advanced page... I
just tried a couple of links there and they 404, so they're not even
current, sigh:

Learn Computer Vision with Python and OpenCV [Video]
Learning Vue.js 2.0

... the former sounds pretty specialized, the latter doesn't even sound
like a Python book.

Just wondering if in addition to nudging Packt again, we can maybe help
out a bit with organizational ideas?  I don't have any specific idea for
presenting a long list of books in a better way.

This isn't the first time Packt has made edits adding their own books
and removing others. I'm sure it isn't deliberate, but it does look
like the sort of mistake a bot edit would make.

("enfors"), enter my password, leave the OpenID field empty, and click
Login. Nothing happens, and eventually I get a Gateway timeout message. I'm
running Chrome on Ubuntu, if it matters.

Strange, it's working fine for me.

I do see high load on apache (lots of people using
full text search, trying to setup new accounts, etc.):

You cracked it! I pressed the "Forgot password" link, and it sent me the
link for that, along with my username which was apparently
"ChristerEnfors", and not "enfors", like I thought (very strange - I
*always* use "enfors" unless it's taken and it very rarely is).

So now I can log in, but it seems that I now need to have "ChristerEnfors"
added to the list of people who can edit LocalUserGroups (at least, I see
no edit button). I previously asked to have "enfors" added to that list,
but that did no good for obvious reason... :-/ Sorry to be such a hassle!

May I be allowed to hijack this relevant thread just to say:

1. I was experiencing the same issue today. To the point of thinking
the wiki may have been abandoned / registrations disabled. Perhaps
those 144k users, which is more than English Wikipedia has active
users, could indeed be trimmed by sending the users who hadn't had an
edit and hadn't logged in in the past five years a friendly reminder
... Then drop just the emails that bounce. :D

2. I'd like to kindly ask to be given permission to edit the same
page, LocalUserGroups. My username is Jara Kaca (sans whitespace).

85/15 is a bit lean for the best burgers, 70/30 is the way to go.
