So as a further followup, this has been going on in many places, and
most people are concluding it's a scam. It happened to come across a
different place I'm subscribed to... I'm not sure I'm suspicious enough
to completely endorse their conclusion, but here's what a part of the
gcc team responded - the report of their "bad links" were on sites that
mirror old libstdc++ content and are way out of date (the official pages
have long since had the reference to the expired site removed). Do we
deserve praise or blame for reacting more politely, I wonder?  :)

Just FYI to people who reacted to our go-round with this.

As I'm sure you realise, we can't remove the links because they're not
on our website. Please stop this link farming, your site has already
been reported to google so will not get any boost in page rank from
your pathetic attempts to promote it.

Also, your pathetic attempts to create links from the mailing list
archives don't even work because the links get removed, see:
