Hello,

I'm one of the organizers of the SciPy conference (
https://www.scipy2025.scipy.org/). I'd like to edit references to the
conference at https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonConferences.

They all currently say *"SciPy (Austin, USA) - focuses on scientific
applications"*. I'd like to change those references to *"SciPy (Tacoma,
USA) - focuses on scientific applications"*. The conference was held in
Tacoma, Washington, USA in 2024 and will be held there again in 2025.

Following the process described at
https://wiki.python.org/moin/FrontPage#use, I created an account and am
requesting edit access to make those changes.

*Account name: *JamesLamb

Thanks very much for your time and consideration.

-James

I'd just change it to (USA) to match other conferences that might rotate
locations - that is, if you don't expect to hold one outside the USA in
the foreseeable future (politics being what they are, there's more than
one conference that relocated elsewhere during the first term of the
current president)

Thanks very much, I agree! I've followed your advice and just changed it to
"(USA)" (no city). The conference is expected to be held in the United
States for the foreseeable future.. and if that changes in the future, now
I have the edit access to update it.

Cheers,

-James

Message-ID: <CAMRRKVeagkWv1BMEVX6DGbTWusRmB7EZ8vdvJ12=3SHdiGsUzA@mail.gmail.com>

Hi,

This is following up and duplication (and extension) of the question on the
forum
https://discuss.python.org/t/wiki-python-org-access-to-data-dump-of-contents/79878
.

Posting here on advice of Chris Angelico (Rosuav).

I?m wondering if there?s an accessible dump of the data of wiki.python.org?

I understand the source and the theme are discussed on the forum, but I'm
looking for the contents itself.

Is Pydotorg WG aware of any way of accessing the actual contents itself?

Obviously what this means is highly variable. Ideally with revision history
would be amazing but a much larger lift, this would be ideal to recognise
where the effort behind it has come from. Though any access to the data
would be great. Specifically I'm interested in looking into the valuable
resources that are still accessed through the wiki, thinking about what the
future of it could be. It's a great resource that many people still believe
in. Ideally it could somehow be given a new lease-on-life and I see the
first step in that understanding what it currently is.

Thanks!

Hi Elena,

I have already responded on Discourse:

https://discuss.python.org/t/wiki-python-org-access-to-data-dump-of-contents/79878/3

If you want to become an editor of the wiki, please tell us you wiki
user name. You could then help improve pages.

If you want to get an overview of what's available, have a look at:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/TitleIndex

A more powerful search page is available at:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/FindPage

Cheers,

Unlike many content management systems, MoinMoin does not use a
"database" that you would dump in that sense, but rather a
filesystem-based storage scheme. That's moderately easy to transfer as
you can just unpack a tarball made of the data directory. Whether such a
thing exists, is considered shareable, or even whether it's any more use
than just wandering around the wiki using a web browser is questionable
(personally, I have No Idea). MoinMoin's own docs have something on the
storage layout:

https://moinmo.in/MoinDev/Storage

Personal opinion entirely: the way people interact with online media
evolves, and the wiki seems to be losing (or perhaps it's "has lost")
relevance just kind of organically, as has happened with mailing lists,
with usenet newsgroups, etc. There are still people who prefer older
ways and find the new ones less friendly to their familiar usage
patterns (I'm trying to head off a storm of complaints here - I happen
not to be particularly fond of "forum software" either, to cite the case
of python-dev list -> discuss.python.org). Not sure how much work
should be done to try to give the wiki a "new lease on life" to use your
expression, if today's readers don't prefer this form. After all, even
StackOverflow is starting to lose relevance as a resource.

Pages that get any kind of regular attention are mostly resource lists -
editors, IDEs, training, books, user groups, consultants, web
frameworks, etc. and these seem to be good cases for retaining in a
community-curated place. Things that are more in the nature of
"documentation" have a risk of being poorly written, out of date,
littered with links that no longer work (and sometimes the sites linked
to have been taken over by {scam, spam)mers who serve up some less than
desirable content).

Hello, I noticed that a wiki page I edited was changed:

https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuideChinese?action=info

This revision overwrites my Chinese translation and replaces the content
with new English content.

Do you have any reason for this?

Should I revert to the old version?

Yours sincerely

Looks like a possible mistake - I think someone overwrote the page
with a different page's content.

I have reverted the edit.

Hi there!

I'd like to clean up a few dead links, and add links to more up-to-date
tools, including my own. Here are the details:

1. In https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonEditors#Online_Editors:
- https://c9.io/ can be updated to https://aws.amazon.com/cloud9/, after
they were acquired. The link text can be changed to 'AWS Cloud9', too.
- https://www.getdatajoy.com now redirects to https://www.overleaf.com/, an
online Latex editor (with no mention of Python). I think this could be
removed.
- https://plon.io/ is now a parked / expired domain. Can be removed.
- https://wakari.io is now unreachable. Can be removed.
- I'll add links (and supporting descriptions) to
https://jupyter.org/try-jupyter/lab/, https://colab.google/ and
https://cliprun.com/ (my tool - a free browser-based Python IDE, with
file-handling, library support, data viz). Appreciate it's beneficial to
have my own tool listed, but I think it's genuinely relevant here.

2. In https://wiki.python.org/moin/PythonJobs:
- Python Now <http://www.pythonnow.com/> can be removed, as that site now
403s.
- r/PythonJobs/ <https://www.reddit.com/r/PythonJobs/> could be added.

I'm obviously happy to make these changes, once given access. My username
is AndyCloke.

Thanks,
Andy
