Hi Sunita (and anyone interested in contributing to Foss),

FYI, I'm forwarding the NVDA mentors email. They are Vardhan Varma
<vardhanvarma AT gmail>** and Manish Agrawal <manish10 AT gmail>, so
feel free to get in touch with them via the mailing list or email them
directly.

Thanks.

Subject: Re: NVDA project- introduction

Hi Svaksha & Nirmita,

It's really good that we have some people willing to come on board
for the NVDA
   development.

Just to get one fact straight .. calling me or Manish a 'NVDA Core
Developer' would
be a wrong statement. We are trying to coordinate efforts to
create a team which
can contribute features useful for users in the Indian
subcontinent. While Manish
has been associated with NVDA as user and as a developer for a
longer duration,
I'm only few months old in this.

Coming to the topic ..which is .. there is an interest in
contributing to NVDA by certain
persons and we want to create a environment in which they can start.

I'm thinking of things to be done:

    Stage 1:
        (1) We update the wiki page at
http://code.google.com/p/saksham-projects/wiki/InNvdaSource to make
it usable !
        (2) If needed, I can make screen cast(s) to explaining stuff.
        (3) We add interested people to the nvda-india-dev google group
        (4) We take some simple tickets and folks start working on them.

I expect Stage 1 to take the Month of January. We can have IRC / audio conf
timing pre defined to make this as easy as possible.

After this stage, I think only serious people will want to keep
going and that will be a
good time for a hands on session.

    Highly personal opinion follows :
The NVDA is a strange beast. On one hand, for
the sighted people it takes a while to get 'hang' of a screen
reader, and on the other
hand, the particular set of technologies ( Windows+Python+Office
Automation+Accessibility etc), makes it rather unattractive to lot
of people. Also,
last but not the least, it requires sighted developers to really
think and analyze from a different perspective .. Manish and Nirmita can
correct me here .. but I think that's the reason we have been
seeing people leaving
after a couple of months ( have been there and done that myself
(-: ) , so I'm kind
of trying to factor in the dropout rate in the plan.

However if Nirmita & Manish think that we can start with a
hands-on session first,
I'll be okay to do that also.

Does that sound like a plan ?

Vardhan
