Thanks Preston! I think we want to actually reuse getcwdu as the getcwd implementation in Python 3. Right now the crazy py3 string wrapping actually returns a Python 3 string from getcwd, but it should really be doing what getcwdu does (particularly important on Windows where filenames are stored as unicode)
