I can no longer reproduce the error.  For the record the command was:
# /usr/bin/env PYPY_GC_MAX_DELTA=200MB /usr/local/bin/pypy --jit 
loop_longevity=300 ../../rpython/bin/rpython --source  -Ojit  
targetpypystandalone.py

I'll let you know if this error re-occurs (reliably).
