I would recommend the book "Transactional Memory 2nd edition" (2010) by Harris, Larus, and Rajwar.

P.S - once I get the latest pypy stm branch compiled, I would like to give a talk to the Montreal Python User's Group about PyPy stm. Using "Transactional Memory," I would describe the approach. I'll also want to see if I can write a PyPy STM version of the Santa Claus problem a la the Haskell solution in "Beautiful Code."
