Ah.  I remember now: this pypy-c-75020 was built using pypy-c instead of
CPython.  It's still a bug but it explains why I cannot reproduce it with other
pypy-c's.  The issue here is in line 755 of rbigint.py: 

    assert carry <= (widen_digit(MASK) << 1)

With pypy, this wraps around and translates incorrectly to "assert carry <= -2".
