[pypy-issue] [issue831] Codes instead of cyrillic letters in terminal

If I start gnome-terminal on my Linux laptop, any non-ascii character I type --
either at the bash prompt or at the pypy prompt -- end up as a "?" character,
both in display and in behavior.  I failed to figure out what I need to
configure to make this change (nothing in the configuration dialog boxes, and
setting the environment before has no effect, either).  Can you give more
information on how to reproduce?  Thanks!
