Microbenchmark with the 1.bz2 file after decompressing (on my desktop i7 920, 64-bit 
machine):

$ pypy -m timeit "content = file('1').read()" "content.split('\x00')"
10 loops, best of 3: 1.15 sec per loop
$ python -m timeit "content = file('1').read()" "content.split('\x00')"
10 loops, best of 3: 402 msec per loop
