Since this is my pet issue, I will keep plugging it until it's faster than
CPython.  :)  I had high hopes for PyPy 1.7, but alas, only a moderate improvement:

CPython 2.7.2 : 41s   1400 MB
PyPy 1.7      : 56s   1400 MB
