If you can write the C code I can probably add it to "configure".
Here's a sample test that configure currently uses:

/* Check whether right shifting a negative integer extends the sign bit
   or fills with zeros */
int main()
        exit(((-1)>>3 == -1) ? 0 : 1);

Basically, write a little C program that exits with 0 or 1 depending
on double endian-ness.
