From diopib at gmail.com Tue Mar 1 00:51:51 2016 From: diopib at gmail.com (Ibrahim DIOP) Date: Tue, 01 Mar 2016 05:51:51 +0000 Subject: [Python-africa] DjangoGirls Lagos and PyNigeria + African Python Events In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Congratulations to Django Girls Lagos, We feel the awesomeness reading that report :) I think it contains some very valuable informations for any one wishing to organize a python event in Africa. As it was also the case with Django Girls Windhoek, there are 2 major issues one has to deal with when organizing such event: energy and internet connection. Maybe it's a good time to discuss about a project to solve these issues and to encourage people to organize python meet-up and workshops locally if there isn't any. For the internet problem, we were discussing about a physical device setup on the workshop's local network that would contains everything needed, from the tutorial to the packages dependencies. Even IDEs. I don't have any clear idea for the energy problem but all suggestions are welcome. Let me know what you think, maybe later we can take it on GitHub. What I know I've learnt in discussions on the board. Here's my understanding. If a group, particularly a not for profit group, wants to use the two snakes mark as it is to represent the Python language, that's fine, and changing the colors is fine. So the mark superimposed on the map of Africa would be fine. The problem comes when the mark is modified, but is still being used for something Python related. Having all sorts of variations of the mark would weaken the mark and make it harder defend in court if someone were to abuse it. So we (the PSF) have to be very protective of that. It's fine to let a lot of people use the one mark to refer to Python, but as soon as we let people make changes and use variations of that mark, it becomes diluted and legal defense of it becomes difficult to impossible. Basically, we can't let people make up their own versions of the Python mark. That may not be the best explanation of it, which is why we have a trademarks committee with people who understand this far better than I do. Again, I'm not the authority on this but if you want to pursue using this logo, please check with trademark committee first. If they say it's fine, then all is good, but if they say no, then the PSF would have to protect the mark, with legal action if necessary. This isn't something that the PSF enjoys, I might add. It's what the lawyers tell us we must do to protect the Python marks and intellectual property. We hope to notify accepted presenters by no later than the 9th of September 2016. The presentation slots will be 30 minutes long, with an additional 10 minutes for discussion at the end. Shared sessions are also possible. The presentations will be in English. PyConZA offers a mentorship program for inexperienced speakers. If you would like assistance preparing your submission, email team at za.pycon.org with a rough draft of your talk proposal and we'll find a suitable experienced speaker to act as a mentor. In addition to talks, we are also looking for proposals for tutorials, demos, sprints and open spaces. Tutorials are intended to be more in-depth introductions to a topic with a limited number of attendees. Tutorial sessions can be up to 90 minutes long. Demos are cool things for attendees to see and interact with. Open spaces are open discussion forums where communities with a common interest gather to present views, ask questions and meet people interested in the topic. Sprints are coding efforts and hack days that happen after the conference. There's no need to register a sprint or open space topic upfront, but doing so allows us to advertise them during the conference. -- Neil Muller On behalf of the PyConZA organising committee
