From benjamin at python.org Mon Jun 2 01:02:03 2014 From: benjamin at python.org (Benjamin Peterson) Date: Sun, 01 Jun 2014 16:02:03 -0700 Subject: [RELEASE] Python 2.7.7 Message-ID: <1401663723.32188.123962509.15B80988@webmail.messagingengine.com> I'm happy to announce the immediate availability of Python 2.7.7. Python 2.7.7 is a regularly scheduled bugfix release for the Python 2.7 series. This release includes months of accumulated bugfixes. All the changes in Python 2.7.7 are described in detail in the Misc/NEWS file of the source tarball. You can view it online at http://hg.python.org/cpython/raw-file/f89216059edf/Misc/NEWS The 2.7.7 release also contains fixes for two severe, if arcane, potential security vulnerabilities. The first was the possibility of reading arbitrary process memory using JSONDecoder.raw_decode. [1] (No other json APIs are affected.) The second security issue is an integer overflow in the strop module. [2] (You actually have no reason whatsoever to use the strop module.) Another security note for 2.7.7 is that the release includes a backport from Python 3 of hmac.compare_digest. This begins the implementation of PEP 466, Network Security Enhancements for Python 2.7.x. Downloads are at https://python.org/download/releases/2.7.7/ This is a production release. Downloads are on PyPI: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/six Documentation is available on Read the Docs: http://six.readthedocs.org/ Here is the changelog for 1.7.0: - Pull request #30: Implement six.moves with a PEP 302 meta path hook. - Pull request #32: Add six.wraps, which is like functools.wraps but always sets the __wrapped__ attribute. - Pull request #35: Improve add_metaclass, so that it doesn't end up inserting another class into the hierarchy. - Pull request #34: Add import mappings for dummy_thread. - Pull request #33: Add import mappings for UserDict and UserList. - Pull request #31: Select the implementations of dictionary iterator routines at import time for a 20% speed boost. From phd at phdru.name Sun Jun 8 16:42:57 2014 From: phd at phdru.name (Oleg Broytman) Date: Sun, 8 Jun 2014 16:42:57 +0200 Subject: mimedecode.py version 2.6.0 Message-ID: <20140608144257.GA31643@phdru.name> Hello! mimedecode.py WHAT IS IT Mail users, especially in non-English countries, often find that mail messages arrived in different formats, with different content types, in different encodings and charsets. Usually this is good because it allows us to use appropriate format/encoding/whatever. Sometimes, though, some unification is desirable. For example, one may want to put mail messages into an archive, make HTML indices, run search indexer, etc. In such situations converting messages to text in one character set and skipping some binary attachments is much desirable. Here is the solution - mimedecode.py. This is a program to decode MIME messages. The program expects one input file (either on command line or on stdin) which is treated as an RFC822 message, and decodes to stdout or an output file. If the file is not an RFC822 message it is just copied to the output one-to-one. If the file is a simple RFC822 message it is decoded as one part. If it is a MIME message with multiple parts ("attachments") all parts are decoded. Decoding can be controlled by command-line options. Version 2.6.0 (2014-06-08) Make options -e/-i to work with multipart subparts. Add option -I to completely ignore a part - no headers, no body, no warning. Open all output files in binary mode. Output os.linesep instead of '\n'. Test --save-headers|body|message masks one after another to allow saving a message or a subpart to more than one file. WHAT'S NEW in version 2.5.0 (2014-03-18) Add option --set-header=header:value to set header's value (only at the top level). Add option --set-param=header:param=value to set header parameter's value (only at the top level). The header must exist. Add option -B to skip content-transfer-decoding binary attachments. Add options --save-headers, --save-body and --save-message to save decoded headers/bodies/messages to files. Add option -O to set the destination directory for output files. Fix a minor bug: if a multipart message (or a subpart) lacks any textual content - avoid putting an excessive newline. Changes since version 3.0 ------------------------- - Added support for `followlinks` parameter in `FTPHost.walk`. [1] - Trying to pickle `FTPHost` and `FTPFile` objects now raises explicit `TypeError`s to make clear that not being able to pickle these objects is intentional. [2] - Improved exception messages for socket errors [3]. - Fixed handling of server error messages with non-ASCII characters when running under Python 2.x. [4] - Added a generic "session factory factory" to make creation of session factories easier for common use cases (encrypted connections, non-default port, active/passive mode, FTP session debug level and combination of these). [5] This includes a workaround for `M2Crypto.ftpslib.FTP_TLS`; this class won't be usable with ftputil 3.0 and up with _just_ the session factory recipe described in the documentation. [6] - Don't assume time zone differences to always be full hours, but rather 15-minute units. [7] For example, according to [8], Nepal's time zone is UTC+05:45. - Improved documentation on timeout handling. This includes information on internal creation of additional FTP connections (for remote files, including uploads and downloads). This may help understand better why the `keep_alive` method is limited. Note that ftputil 3.0 broke backward compatibility with ftputil 2.8 and before. The differences are described here: http://ftputil.sschwarzer.net/trac/wiki/WhatsNewInFtputil3.0 What is ftputil? ---------------- ftputil is a high-level FTP client library for the Python programming language. ftputil implements a virtual file system for accessing FTP servers, that is, it can generate file-like objects for remote files. The library supports many functions similar to those in the os, os.path and shutil modules. ftputil has convenience functions for conditional uploads and downloads, and handles FTP clients and servers in different timezones. This announcement is also available on our web-site for online reading: http://www.egenix.com/company/news/eGenix-PyRun-2.0.0-GA.html ________________________________________________________________________ INTRODUCTION eGenix PyRun is our open source, one file, no installation version of Python, making the distribution of a Python interpreter to run based scripts and applications to Unix based systems as simple as copying a single file. eGenix PyRun's executable only needs 11MB for Python 2 and 13MB for Python 3, but still supports most Python application and scripts - and it can be compressed to just 3-4MB using upx, if needed. Compared to a regular Python installation of typically 100MB on disk, eGenix PyRun is ideal for applications and scripts that need to be distributed to several target machines, client installations or customers. It makes "installing" Python on a Unix based system as simple as copying a single file. eGenix has been using the product internally in the mxODBC Connect Server since 2008 with great success and decided to make it available as a stand-alone open-source product. We provide both the source archive to build your own eGenix PyRun, as well as pre-compiled binaries for Linux, FreeBSD and Mac OS X, as 32- and 64-bit versions. The binaries can be downloaded manually, or you can let our automatic install script install-pyrun take care of the installation: ./install-pyrun dir and you're done. Please see the product page for more details: http://www.egenix.com/products/python/PyRun/ ________________________________________________________________________ NEWS This is a major release of eGenix PyRun. The most significant step forward in this release is the addition of Python 3.4 support. New Features ------------ * Added Python 3.4 support to eGenix PyRun. * eGenix PyRun defaults to PYTHONIOENCODING = "utf-8:surrogateescape" for Python 3.4 to provide a better user experience. * Enabled the lib2to3 package to work with eGenix PyRun. This allows on-the-fly Python 3 conversions as used by e.g. the setuptools package to work with eGenix PyRun. * Frozen modules in eGenix PyRun now always have the __file__ attribute set - unlike in standard Python This increases compatibility of pyrun with existing Python software. Submitted as http://bugs.python.org/issue21736 Enhancements / Changes ---------------------- * Added work-around for bug in Python 3.4 modulefinder module. Submitted as http://bugs.python.org/issue21707 * Added work-around for problem with logging package's use of the __file__ attribute. Submitted as http://bugs.python.org/issue21709 * Added work-around for getting runpy.run_path() to work with frozen modules in Python 3. This is needed to be able to run packages and ZIP files directly from the command line. Submitted as http://bugs.python.org/issue21737 * Turned our pkgutil.py patch to support frozen modules into a real patch instead of doing this dynamically. Submitted as http://bugs.python.org/issue21749 * Removed support for Python 2.5 from eGenix PyRun. install-pyrun Quick Install Enhancements --------------------------------------------- eGenix PyRun includes a shell script called install-pyrun, which greatly simplifies installation of PyRun. It works much like the virtualenv shell script used for creating new virtual environments (except that there's nothing virtual about PyRun environments). https://downloads.egenix.com/python/install-pyrun With the script, an eGenix PyRun installation is as simple as running: ./install-pyrun targetdir This will automatically detect the platform, download and install the right pyrun version into targetdir. We have updated this script since the last release: * Updated install-pyrun to default to eGenix PyRun 2.0.0 and its feature set. * install-pyrun will no longer install the latest versions of pip and setuptools due to recent incompatible changes in those packages. Instead, the script uses fixed defaults and makes it easy to override them. * install-pyrun now uses pip 1.4.1 and setuptools 2.1 per default instead of the latest versions for better backwards compatibility with packages not hosted on PyPI. * install-pyrun can optionally fetch the latest versions of pip and setuptools by using "latest" as version number for --pip-version and --setuptools-version. * install-pyrun script is now available in signed and hashed form for additional security. For a complete list of changes, please see the eGenix PyRun Changelog: http://www.egenix.com/products/python/PyRun/changelog.html ________________________________________________________________________ LICENSE eGenix PyRun is distributed under the eGenix.com Public License 1.1.0 which is an Open Source license similar to the Python license. You can use eGenix PyRun in both commercial and non-commercial settings without fee or charge. Please see our license page for more details: http://www.egenix.com/products/python/PyRun/license.html The package comes with full source code. ________________________________________________________________________ DOWNLOADS The download archives and instructions for installing eGenix PyRun can be found at: http://www.egenix.com/products/python/PyRun/ As always, we are providing pre-built binaries for all common platforms: Windows 32/64-bit, Linux 32/64-bit, FreeBSD 32/64-bit, Mac OS X 32/64-bit. Source code archives are available for installation on other platforms, such as Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, etc. _______________________________________________________________________ SUPPORT Commercial support for this product is available from eGenix.com. There will be two days of talks, and we will hold sprints on the 4th & 5th of October. We are currently accepting proposals for talks. If you would like to give a presentation, please register at http://za.pycon.org/ and submit your proposal, following the instructions at http://za.pycon.org/talks/submit-talk . We hope to notify accepted presenters by no later than the 7th of September. The presentation slots will be 30 minutes long, with an additional 10 minutes for discussion at the end. Shared sessions are also possible. The presentations will be in English. In addition to talks, we are also looking for proposals for tutorials, demos and open spaces. Tutorials are intended to be more in-depth introductions to a topic with a limited number of attendees. Tutorial sessions can be up to 90 minutes long. Demos are cool things for attendees to see and interact with. Open spaces are open discussion forums where communities with a common interest gather to present views, ask questions and meet people interested in the topic. There's no need to register a sprint topic upfront, but doing so allows us to advertise them during the conference. -- Neil Muller On behalf of the PyConZA organising committee From pjenvey at underboss.org Fri Jun 20 22:32:15 2014 From: pjenvey at underboss.org (Philip Jenvey) Date: Fri, 20 Jun 2014 13:32:15 -0700 Subject: PyPy3 2.3.1 released Message-ID: <48303A86-1ED8-4ED9-8263-545A26F70E98@underboss.org> ===================== PyPy3 2.3.1 - Fulcrum ===================== We're pleased to announce the first stable release of PyPy3. PyPy3 targets Python 3 (3.2.5) compatibility. We would like to thank all of the people who donated_ to the `py3k proposal`_ for supporting the work that went into this. You can download the PyPy3 2.3.1 release here: http://pypy.org/download.html#pypy3-2-3-1 Highlights ========== * The first stable release of PyPy3: support for Python 3! * The stdlib has been updated to Python 3.2.5 * Additional support for the u'unicode' syntax (`PEP 414`_) from Python 3.3 * Updates from the default branch, such as incremental GC and various JIT improvements * Resolved some notable JIT performance regressions from PyPy2: - Re-enabled the previously disabled collection (list/dict/set) strategies - Resolved performance of iteration over range objects - Resolved handling of Python 3's exception __context__ unnecessarily forcing frame object overhead .. _`PEP 414`: http://legacy.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0414/ What is PyPy? ============== PyPy is a very compliant Python interpreter, almost a drop-in replacement for CPython 2.7.6 or 3.2.5. It's fast due to its integrated tracing JIT compiler. This release supports x86 machines running Linux 32/64, Mac OS X 64, Windows, and OpenBSD, as well as newer ARM hardware (ARMv6 or ARMv7, with VFPv3) running Linux. Nevow is a web application construction kit written in Python and based on Twisted. It is designed to allow the programmer to express as much of the view logic as desired in Python, and includes a pure Python XML expression syntax named stan to facilitate this. However it also provides rich support for designer-edited templates, using a very small XML attribute language to provide bi-directional template manipulation capability. This release includes a number of minor new features and bug fixes. It also includes changes to modernize Nevow's packaging - installation of Nevow using `pip` is now supported. This release also marks the move of Nevow development to Github. You can read about all of the changes in this release in the NEWS file: https://github.com/twisted/nevow/blob/release-0.11.1/NEWS.txt You can find Nevow on PyPI: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/Nevow Or on Github: https://github.com/twisted/nevow Enjoy! It comes with goodies such as code completion, syntax highlighting, syntax analysis, code analysis, refactor, debug, interactive console, etc. Details on PyDev: http://pydev.org Details on its development: http://pydev.blogspot.com What is LiClipse? --------------------------- LiClipse is a PyDev standalone with goodies such as support for Multiple cursors, theming and a number of other languages such as Django Templates, Kivy Language, Mako Templates, Html, Javascript, etc. It's also a commercial counterpart which helps supporting the development of PyDev. Details on LiClipse: http://brainwy.github.io/liclipse/ Release Highlights: ------------------------------- * **Important**: PyDev requires Eclipse 3.8 or 4.3 onwards and Java 7! For older versions, keep using PyDev 2.x (use LiClipse: http://brainwy.github.io/liclipse for a PyDev standalone with all requirements bundled). * Thank you for helping in the current crowdfunding: http://tiny.cc/pydev-2014. * **pep8**: * **pep8.py** was upgraded to the latest version. * **Code formatting**: * **autopep8.py** can now be used to code-format Python files (must be enabled in the code formatter preferences -- use '-a -a' for really aggressive mode). * Moved auto-save from the code formatter page to the save actions page (and created links to each other). * Fixed issue where a space was placed before a unary operator on an empty line. * The internal Jython was upgraded to 2.7.beta2 (some manual shrinking was applied to make it smaller). * On a run as unit-test (**Ctrl+F9**), if Shift is pressed when doing the launch, the unit-test will be launched in debug mode. * **Shift+F9** can now be used to launch the current editor in debug mode (so, no more running a module with F9 to run it again later on in debug mode with F11). * Issue where the modules manager would miss the bultin modules was fixed (i.e.: Ctrl+1 to fix 'sys' undefined variable will show the 'import sys' fix). * Fixed corner case where filtering global tokens could miss some entries. * Fixed issue where relative import with more levels would not be found (on dotted imports). * It's now possible to debug UTF-8 files with BOM on Python 3. * Code completion proposals order was tweaked so that locals/globals appear first. * Trailing commas are no longer left when auto-removing unused imports (if that option is enabled in the preferences). * The manual now has instructions on how to use the Find Referrers: http://pydev.org/manual_adv_debugger_find_referrers.html while debugging. * The PyDev editor supports the new dark theme in Eclipse 4.4 (so, when it's chosen the editor colors are properly updated). * Code analysis: when a package imports itself it's no longer warned as an import not found.
