Initial Comment:
The "Extending and Embedding the Python Interpreter"
talks about Makefile.pre.in.  Alas, that file is no
longer available.  I think it was a mistake to remove
that file while the "Extending" document still refers
to it; a year or two to switch over to the new
distutils way of doing things would have been nice.
