In the Extending/Embedding FAQ at
http://www.python.org/doc/faq/extending.html, under
question 14 (I want to compile a Python module on my
Linux system...), you say:
For Debian, run apt-get install python-devel

The problem is that Debian's Python development package
is called python-dev, not python-devel.
