It was probably problem somewhere else in the system, I can
not reproduce it right now, so some upgrade has probably
fixed this issue.

Test works for me on FreeBSD 4.8.
Make sure that you can use anydbm - more details on what db
module is actually invoked by anydbm might help shed some
more light on the matter (use the file utility on a database
created with anydbm.open()).
