Summary: Build issues (lib path) on linux2-x86_64

Initial Comment:
The current CVS HEAD won't build "out of the box" on a
Fedora x86_64 box, nor on any other Linux AMD64
platform. This is due to the fact that the libraries
for many things are not in /usr/lib, but /usr/lib64,
and the current 'autoconf' script, as well as the
current setup.py do not look there. When added, they
detect, build.
