I've tried the code below for both 2.2.2 and  2.3.2

...   def __eq__(self, other):
...     # stack overflow expected!
...     return self == other
...
...

Armin fixed this for Py2.4.

It is a behaviour change that may affect existing, working
code, so it was not backported.

This problem does not exist in 2.4 but seems to still be in 2.3 CVS.
