3.1, WinXP, works fine.
I am inclined to close this as idiosyncratic to a particular 2.5 installation, which is beyond patching now anyway.

OP, respond if you have a problem with new 2.7, and include version splash line like "Python 3.1.2 (r312:79149, Mar 21 2010, 00:41:52) [MSC v.1500 32 bit (Intel)] on win32"
