I'm planning on cutting 3.0rc2 tonight. I think the blockers are down
to a manageable level, and I want to thank everyone for their hard work!

4211 has been pronounced by Guido and will get committed
3799 has been making no progress and will get deferred
4326 I believe is waiting for MvL
3775 is mine

I have a PTA meeting tonight so I plan on freezing the 3.0 branch at
9pm US/Eastern or 0200 UTC 06 Nov. You can commit fixes for the open
blocker issues until then. As usual, I'll send a message out when the
branch is open again.

Cheers,
- -Barry

There appears to be a bug in the documentation for 3.0. See issue 4266.

http://bugs.python.org/issue4266

I'm sorry that I'm too tired to figure out what the basic problem is.
I've made the issue a release blocker (the only one left for 3.0rc2),
and we'll try again tomorrow.

The branch is unfrozen.

I've a workaround for the problem. It removes the seealso tag that is
responsible for the error.

Barry,

If you haven't already, you may want to try clobbering your Doc/tools
directory on the OS X machine. I've had the Doc build die on me a few
times in the past and it was due to things being moved around in there.

Cheers,
Nick.

Thanks Nick. I've figured out the problem and got it working now (I
think -- it's still running). So I'm again trying again. ;)

Please do what you can to persuade people *not* to use this as a
production release. Early signs are there may be a substantial "I'm
going to download the latest version available" contingent.

I know the testing will be good for 3.0, but we should remind people
this is still early days for 3.0.

Which reminds me, now 3.0 is final does this mean the Grand Library
Reorganization has to wait until 4.0?

 Steve

This is just a release candidate, but you have a good point. We
should think about what we really want to say in the final
announcement. If you're good at writing these things (and I clearly
suck at it :), let me know and we'll try to coordinate.

I overheard Guido say there will never be a Python 4.0 :)

Yeah, mate, I'm fricking brilliant. Modest, too. Let me know when you
need it and I'll try and have it *On Your Desktop* no later than a year
after that (geddit?)

Seriously, try this (possibly beginning with "READERS SHOULD NOTE"):

"""
Readers should note that while every care has been taken in the
production of the Python 3.0 release, this release has significant
backwards with the 2.X series. These incompatibilities have been
introduced by design, with the goal of improving the language in the
long term.

Furthermore it is likely that there will be a considerable delay before
some authors of Python packages and extension modules start to provide
3.0-compatible releases. Particularly for extension module authors there
are significant hurdles to be overcome.

For these reasons you are NOT recommended to rely on Python 3.0 as your
main production Python implementation. Though the release team feels
that the system is of a quality comparable with the recently-released
Python 2.6, the latter system is currently the recommended version for
production use.
"""

Followed by some blether about who to contact or what to do about
migration issues. Up to you. Please feel free to run this by anyone else
you choose, run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes, etc., etc.

And now back to my scheduled class ... good luck with the final release.

regards
 Steve

BTW, allow me a partial rehabilitation by saying that this seealso tag
was invalid syntax. That this wasn't indicated clearly is my fault however.

I'm sorry that I couldn't help at the time these issues came up, but it
was both times around 3 AM for my timezone. It may be normal working
time for Christian ;) but not for me...

cheers,
Georg

> time for Christian ;) but not for me...

Thanks Georg. I realize (pretty late in the game I know ;) that I
should be spinning the releases in my morning, not in my evening,
which would mean a better time for Europeans. My mornings are usually
pretty busy, but I'll see what I can do for the upcoming releases.

Thanks everyone on #python-dev, it looks good to release 3.0rc3
tonight. Benjamin and Brett have two last things to commit and that
should close out the showstoppers for this release, assuming the
buildbots are happy.

I will be afk for about the next 30-40 minutes and then I will make
the release. Please consider the 3.0 branch frozen until further
notice. Ping me in irc if you need something urgent and I'll return
when I get back from dinner.

Martin, the tag is ready for the Windows builds (barring any
unforeseen snafus).

3.0rc3 is out, so the branch is unfrozen.

Remember, December 3rd is the planned release date for Python 3.0
final! I'll be spending time between now and then coordinating the
release with various folks.

Please! If you have something that absolutely must get into 3.0
final, make sure there is a release blocker issue covering it. This
includes everything and anything (website updates, announcement
coordination, etc.) not just code. If there's no release blocker
issue for it, I am not responsible for my brain's lack of short and
long term memory :).

Please! Do not wait until the last day to get your stuff in or ping
me or Guido for a decision. I am on #python-dev every day, so ping my
nick 'barry' if you need something. I am planning on freezing the
branch several days before the 3rd so that we can make sure all the
binaries and anything else we need to release is ready before the 3rd.

Thanks, and be proud of this big accomplishment!
