Its also about preventing the brown paper bag releases caused by stupid
screwups.

As has been noted, release candidate -> maintenance release is the
approach that has worked well in the past. Only including bug fixes
means the alpha/beta stages aren't needed, but going through an RC makes
sure the installers and the like are all in a happy state as well.
