I think the pre-GitHub stats includes merge commits too:

(Look at the commits from Feb 7, 2017.)

It's normal to have less commits on master since we are now doing
"merge in master-cherrypick into maintenance branches" instead of
"merge from X.Y to X.Y+1 to master".
