I just received my invitation to attend on behalf of the Python Cuba Working Group the meeting where Mr. Barack Obama , President of the U.S.A , will contact Cuban entrepreneurs (on March 21st 2016 at 11:00) . The goal is to encourage successful (business , collaboration , ...) relationships between parties of both countries . Please, I'd like to know of all details you might consider important to have a positive impact upon the work of the Python-Cuba WG , especially if it's appropriate to be said in that context . Regarding Cuban enterprises and individuals , I could think of subjects like: - (legal, executive, ...) barriers to adopt Python in projects incubated by Cuban enterprises, startups and/or freelancers - (idem) for either participation (travel, VISA, access to financial aid, ...) of Cubans in global Python-specific events or for organizing such events in the island - limitations or difficulties that may be found while incorporating Cuban citizens as Python committers (possibility of signing CLA docs) - Impact of OFAC ?laws? upon collaborations submitted to the PSF by Cuban citizens . - Impact of OFAC ?laws? upon PSF/Python community members trying to help Cubans to grow the local community . - What could be improved so that the PSF can hire Cuban citizens ? - Transfer of funds , shipping of goods , ... so that US companies and non-profit orgs may officially sponsor (Python) conferences in Cuba ... - Policies of CUBANIC and domain registration . - p.s. Olemis -- As someone who as worked in U.S. gov before and dealt in similar situations you need to do the following.... 1. *Create a 1 pager of asks that are clear to understand at a glance. *You might have have NO time to actually speak with President Obama, so at the very least you can send one of his aids or advisors away with the handout. 2. *Talk to his advisors/handlers. *His advisors are the ones / those traveling with him are the REAL people you want to talk to. Do not get star struck by focusing on Obama if there is a gaggle of people around him. Focus on the other folks -- start conversation, find out what they do, and figure out how they might fit into your asks. 3. *Have a 30 second sales pitch prepped* -- What are the 2-3 things that would advance Python in Cuba the most? Nail the one sentence for each. If you have time with him, you may only get 30 second encounter. Give the sales pitch, then hand him the 1 pager, along with anyone who is listening (the handlers/advisors). If you have more time than 30 seconds, continue the pitch with the content that is on the one pager. I am on a train to NYC right now, then on another to DC, so I have some time to help w/ the one pager. If you kick off of google doc, I can help w/ formatting, and tying in some of the initiatives that he has been working on to make sure that you are speaking to him directly. I have been traveling and I am preparing to move over to the Netherlands in a few weeks. The cuban members of the group have also been quite busy with all the recent events related to Obama's visit. But well, enough apoligizing already, let's move on to the report. :) Here is a rough list of what we've been up to during the last month. (Other members please feel free to complete it and add details) ================================== - Medardo, Olemis and myself (Pablo) had 4 face to face meetings in La Habana between January and March. This was an excellent chance to get to know each other better and to discuss some of the following issues: * Organization details of possible Cuban Pycon for next year. * Strategies for creating a more active Python community in Cuba. * Organization of a first PyDay event in La Habana (more in the next paragraph). - On Saturday March 12th, in collaboration with the group Encuentro Social de Desarrolladores[1] we organized a small Python event. My original idea was to organize a full-fledged PyDay in the style of the ones that I've attended in Argentina, with talks, lightning talks and hands-on workshops or hackathons. Time allowed for a smaller event with the following three talks: * Olemis gave a very thorough overview of the current state of the Python language and its application to different fields of engineering and computer science. * Medardo spoke about the advantages of using Python as a teaching language in university courses, motivated by an example of teaching object oriented concepts. * I gave a talk about my experience of collaborating for the last two years with cuban Pythonista and friend Alejandro Zamora Fonseca while he was living in Cuba. I emphasized on some of the technical and legal difficulties we encountered, and how Python, its community and philosophy played a crucial role in making our work possible. The event had an audience of over 20 people and there was great interest created around it. Hopefully this kind of events will start to become more frequent and participative in a near future. Olemis, Medardo and Alejandro (currently living here in C?rdoba) are already in contact with other developers in different towns of the island and we hope to find ways to help them start their own communities, with the goal of making things less centralized around Havana.[2] - Motivated by my experience of remote work with Alejandro I am beginning to outline the idea of hiring other Cuban developers in a near future to do part-time work in some data analysis projects. I want to organize this as some kind of "remote internship" and Alejandro would be helping me coordinate this. It's a small contribution but it's defintely something that can help change the lives of a few Cuban developers and may be in the future can be scaled to a larger number. Also this is a great exchange experience that gives us first-hand contact with the challenges and potentialities of Cuban Python developers. - Last but (definitely) not least :) Olemis was taking part of a meeting of President Obama with cuban entrepreneurs and technologists, but I guess that's material for the next report. [1] http://encuentrodesarrolladores.com/ [2] Here a picture of the organization team after the event was finished (from left to right, Medardo, myself, Olemis and Miguel from the ESD group). PloneConf 2016 shall be held in Boston, Massachusetts, US: https://plone.org/events/conferences/plone-conference-2016/plone-conference-2016-boston-massachusetts-usa I'd suggest contacting the conference organizers for hosting future global PloneConfs. In the non-global scope, the Plone Foundation sponsors Plone events. https://plone.org/foundation/event-sponsorship Also currently travelers between the US and Cuba must either go through a proxy country (slow) or have a direct chartered flight with a specific purpose (expensive). For me through a proxy, it would be at least an 19-hour journey with layovers, excluding transportation to and from airports. I have heard that an agreement for direct flights is being negotiated by our governments. --steve -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Steve Piercy Website Builder Soquel, CA From med at merchise.org Thu Mar 24 21:56:25 2016 From: med at merchise.org (Medardo Rodriguez) Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2016 21:56:25 -0400 Subject: [Python-cuba] Plone Conf in Cuba In-Reply-To: References: <56F3E867.9090006@merchise.org> Message-ID: <56F49AC9.6000308@merchise.org> On 3/24/16 2:51 PM, Olemis Lang wrote: > Sure ... but Medardo , I guess you meant 2017 ?
